Circus train going away |
Description: |
The Ringling Bros circus train made an annual trip to Long Island, playing a string of shows at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. The train would use the Mitchell Field Secondary to stage for the shows. Here we see it rolling through Forest Hills with the only instance I can think of where "foreign" equipment ran through onto Long Island-a Conrail caboose. |

Description: |
RF 7 was a daytime train that was a maid of all work on the west end. It started at Fresh Pond, taking cars to Yard A at Sunnyside, then worked out to the Island, most typically on the Atlantic Branch and the near south shore, but could also work the Main Line, such as it is doing here at Mineola with a short train. Usually it got a pair of C 420's; today's edition has a single MP 15. |

The train on the left is an Oyster Bay train, which will take the branch at Nassau after making its Mineola&stop. The train on the right is a local to Hicksville, making all stops, starting at Floral Park, the only eastbound Main Line train to do so. It was set up so that the Oyster Bay train would pass the local, cross over, and there would be time to restore the plant at Nassau before the local was due to leav{. Most of the time, it actually worked. |

Riding in style |
Description: |
Not the crew, which has the spartan accommodations of an MP 15 cab, but the riders in the first car, a subscription only parlor car catering to the high rollers of the area immediately around this station, among others. Seen as the sun sets on a late winter day. The structure at right was once Locust tower, controlling the switch and signals there at the end of double track. Now it is a Nassau County PD substation. |

Off peak |
Description: |
Typical off peak power on the branch was an MP 15 on the east end, and either an FA or power pack equipped MP 15 on the west end. Today we have MP 15 158 doing the honors for this eastbound train at Glen Street. |

RF extra |
Description: |
A single MP 15 rolls east through Hicksville station with a handful of cars. RF 65 has just passed through in the opposite direction, so this train is not the return of RF 65 to the south shore. LIRR freight operations could be confusing at times. This is one of them!! MP 15's were the common power for the outlying locals at the time. The RS 3's were gone about three years at this point, and the remaining C 420's were on the "road" trains from Yard A to the east end, and sometimes still held down a commuter run. |
