In the late 90s, Maersk had a couple of diesels painted in their colors to mark a coast to coast service run for them on BNSF and NS. BNSF painted a GP 60, #146, in this scheme. This is the NS unit, SD40-2 3329, trailing on 31T as it passes the south end of Bevier St. |

Maersk unit |
Description: |
Maersk Lines, the steamship company, had NS and Santa Fe paint a couple of diesels for an ad campaign. The BNSF unit was GP 60 146. Here we see the NS unit, 3329, rolling north on CP train 931-NS 31T-at Bevier St in Binghamton. It was the trailing unit of six on that train. Figures-the sun was out!! |

Deadlined |
Description: |
In poking my way around Chattanooga, I found myself looking at the dead line in Debutts Yard late in the afternoon. It was kind of strange seeing power I thought of as "new" already heading to rebuild, or the torch, including these SD 70M-2s, that seemed to have had a short life on NS. Several did find their way to the NYSW. |

Interesting power for 206 |
Description: |
Train 206 usually got a pair of GEs, once in a while an EMD, almost always C40s with an occasional SD 60 or 70. Today there must have been a problem, as one of the local service SD40 rebuilds is leading the train off the Chenango River bridge, seen from Water St. |

Sometimes you win one |
Description: |
I have family in the Atlanta area, and will usually take one of two routes from home in Arkansas, either US 78 via Tupelo, or US 72 via Huntsville. I like the second one because a good portion of it is in view of the NS Memphis District. Such was the case on this trip, when I caught this local near Courtland, along US 72. Easy shot, and the prize is the GP 59-not many built, and good to see an oddball still in service all these years later. |

An eastbound COFC train passes under the SCL at Petersburg. This route is most often used for coal trains to bypass downtown Petersburg due to congestion issues caused by 200 plus car coal trains, as well as having a better grade profile. There is merchandise freight as well, as this 85 car intermodal train shows. |

Motley mix |
Description: |
Conrail, as a rule in its later days, generally ran a fairly unified power consist-a set of six axle units, sometimes four, depending on what was available, and what standard practice was. Occasionally, something would get out of kilter, and it became anything goes. Here we see an OIBU rolling west with a GP 38 leading an SD 50, and a pair of NS units, one GE, one EMD. They have their 99 cars well in hand, and will get over the road promptly. |

12T |
Description: |
12T usually got whatever power was handy at Allentown, and you never knew what to expect. One of the more mundane, in the sense of unit models, but unusual sets rolls west with 119 cars. That's a long train for a relatively low horsepower consist-only 5000 HP, when you consider all the trains I've seen over the years with 40 cars and 12000 HP. |

Low water |
Description: |
It must have been a lackluster year for snow in the Southern Tier(average is around 90" in a season) as the Chemung River is quite low for this time of year as OIBU rolls its 90 cars across with a couple of off line units helping out. |

Run through power |
Description: |
NS power would sometimes turn up on OIBU, probably after Conrail borrowed it at Enola. It would run to Buffalo, getting turned back to NS there. A pair of NS units trail this OIBU passing the model railroad buildings at Waverly. In a few months, Guilford would put the D&H in bankruptcy and cut it loose. NS would assist in the directed service, and NS power would be a daily event on the Tier. |

H 11 at historic station |
Description: |
H 11 sits at the ex LV station in Sayre PA, once a busy division point on the Lehigh Valley, now just a backwater of a large system. The station has ahd several incarnations as a restaurant over the years. Most, even the good ones, dont seem to make it. Today's train has a varied menu, however, with a former NW short hood SD40-2, and an ex Southern hi hood SD40. |

Autos arriving |
Description: |
An auto rack train arrives at Kansas City on the ex Wabash. We have a "family portrait" of NS power here, one unit in NS and one each of the predecessors. The SD45 is not long for the world at this point, nor are the open racks. I had seen the second unit before-on the Southern at Greensboro in 1980. |

Cresting the grade |
Description: |
40T, today with a pair of NS units, an unusual circumstance for this train, crests the short, steep pull south of Hallstead. The DLW once had a "low grade" here that freights used. The 24 cars on todays train will not tax the power much, though bigger trains really work here. |
