New and old |
Description: |
CP Horn, once upon a time ZY on the EL, is getting new signals. The new boards Conrail will soon install are turned away, while the erstwhile Erie signals remain in service for a few more months. Once the line east of here is single tracked, the new signals will be cut in, and another vestige of the old order will be gone. In a nod to the old, two of the three units on the train are straight SD 40's. |

OIEL arrives at Salamanca on the ex EL Mahoning Division with his train of 68 cars, including a block of TOFC up front. These are obviously not priority trailers. Hes coordinating with ELOI, who is working the yard there at the same time. A year later, I moved to Binghamton, where I lived for 18 years. This was the only time I ever saw both of these trains on the same day, never mind the same location. |

Eastbound in the snow |

Anywhere else, March would be a time of anticipation, as the world throws off the burdens of winter. Not so in upstate NY, where its just another month of snow and cold. BUOI is used to it, and is getting a good start on a trip down the Delaware Division to Jersey, here passing BD on the way out of town. It will be an easy trip, as the 44 cars in the train won't tax the power of the three units doing the work. |

Over the top |
Description: |
BUOI rolls over the summit at appropriately named Gulf Summit behind a pair of SD 40s. Something is lined up westbound, probably OIBU at this time of day, as the westbound home signal shows clear. |

Split signals |
Description: |
Not only is OIBU splitting them by going between them, but they are two different types. Where Im standing was where the Erie RR Waverly station once stood, til it was wiped out in a 1967 derailment. But for that, youd likely see a pair of semaphores here. |

Road side trains |
Description: |
OIBU rolls west along NY 17C, in a shot taken from the side of the road. Close proximity makes an easy chase. |

By the barn |
Description: |
One of my favorite shots, but you could only do it effectively during the long days of late spring and summer, was from an embankment along NY 17C east of Waverly. Here was a barn and silo, lending a real rustic effect to a line that was already quite scenic |

Street running |
Description: |
Almost. The right of way was actually separated by a concrete curb. We see WAIT 2 working through town with one car for Cargill, much to the relief of local drivers, who are used to seeing 90 car coal trains go past at 10 MPH. This train will likely return with several dozen salt cars, a typical move. |
