Title:  Unlikely meet
Description:  WABH 11 with its usual GP 38-2 meets an unlikely unit working the NYSW ayrd, an O&W NW 2. This one was repainted as a "heritage" unit to honor the NYO&W, which had abandoned completely in March 1957.

Eastbound containers
Title:  Eastbound containers
Description:  In the 80s it was not uncommon to see high priority trains behind a motley assortment of medium horsepower units. Conrail would routinely send out van trains with such power, as they did here with a set of 4 axle units, including two still painted for Penn Central. The millenium unit leads.

Coal on the River Line
Title:  Coal on the River Line
Description:  The River Line, the ex NYC West Shore, was known during Conrail years as a freight and intermodal conduit. There was some coal traffic on the line, for an Orange-Rockland power plant at Roseton. One of those trains, UAM 4, is rolling though North Bergen behind a set of power only CR would put on a coal train.

Title:  Local with GP 38
Description:  The power on WEEL39 could be any four axle, usually a B23-7 or GP 38, though GP 40s were known to show up, and even at this late date, even an occasional U23B. Today we get a GP 38-2.

Hiding out in Hillburn
Title:  Hiding out in Hillburn
Description:  BUOI is working the Hillburn yard, just west of Suffern on the former Erie, just 31 miles from Jersey City. The third unit, 6640 shares a number with an ex BN F45 on the NYSW. I saw both within a couple of weeks of each other. Never caught them at the same time, though.

Eastbound past the park
Title:  Eastbound past the park
Description:  An eastbound drifts downhill toward Altoona past the park at the curve. Conrail often mixed in 4 axle power on many trains, even on heavy grades. Odd as it sounds, seeing a GP 38 in the Alleghenies was not that uncommon. Check out the Reading hoppers, many of which lasted well into the 90's in coal service.

Work train
Title:  Work train
Description:  Conrail seemed to always be doing work on the River Line, which usually meant not a lot of action during the day. Today will be another work day, so I headed over to the Southern Tier Line, which turned out to be a good move. Not only did I get a pair of RDCs on the scoot, but SLN 4 behind a pair of C 420s and an SD 45.

Lots of clutter
Title:  Lots of clutter
Description:  The area around Cass St had a lot going on. We see OIEL about to take the switch from track 2 on the Southern Tier to the Meadville Line. There are signals on the Tier, one of them a dwarf on track 1, as well as the signal protecting Cass St for trains coming off the Meadville Line, along with the poles for power and the signals. Cass St tower, long closed, is the concrete block structure to the right of the train.

Taking the Meadville Line
Title:  Taking the Meadville Line
Description:  OIEL, the through road train on the Meadville Line, diverges off the Southern Tier at Cass St in Hornell, heading for Olean and Jamestown. This train would go into the yard at Olean and wait for a new crew. When OIEL made a crew change point, you never knew when it would roll next. There were relatively few crews on this part of the line, and the train was not high priority. We'd get lucky, and chase the coal train also in this album. OIEL would come to life again later in the day, and we'd see it passing Salamanca while we were at the museum there.

On into Pennsylvania
Title:  On into Pennsylvania
Description:  After OIEL left Jamestown, we followed west, a bit of a challenge since there are no good roads that follow the tracks. We caught up near Niobe Jct, where the Columbus & Erie, a low grade line built in the early 20th century, split from the main. This is the last point on the Erie in NY state. Wed have chased to Corry, but the light was about gone-and we had a 220 mile ride home.

Binghamton yard
Title:  Binghamton yard
Description:  This view from Chenango St shows the layout of the yards in downtown Binghamton. At one time, this was all Erie, then EL. After CR sold the Syracuse and Utica lines to NYSW, they got the north side of the yard, at left where 2012 is working a cut of hoppers. Conrail uses the part closer to the ex EL main, at right. You can see the CR power for WABH 11 in their yard. The former D&H station, unoccupied at this time, will in another 16 years become the NYSW base of operations here. The Buffalo Runner runs alongside it.

Four motors east
Title:  Four motors east
Description:  Mostly-the trailing unit is an SD 40-2. Conrail was not shy about running four axle power on big trains, though here on the ex NYC it was a common thing for a long time. Still, its quite a contrast to todays world of six axle power on everything. This 115 car DNDA was eastbound at Dewitt.
