Still working both sides
Title:  Still working both sides
Description:  A C420 is in the midst of its train on RF 7, passing Jamaica station, as a passenger train passes behind another C 420. By this time, the LIRR had all of its 28 GP38-2s in service, and it was becoming unusual to see an Alco on a passenger train. This was quite a catch.

Monkey in the middle
Title:  Monkey in the middle
Description:  The LIRR was not your typical freight carrier. Their focus was primarily commuters, and they are the busiest commuter road in the US, with 90% of their revenue coming from passengers. Their freight operations were largely an afterthought under the MTA, and could get kind of odd. One such unusual practice was running power mid train. This facilitated switching facing point customer sidings, of which there were quite a few. Thus we find RF 7 with C 420 227 working from the middle as it passes Jamaica station on one of the bypass tracks south of track 8.

Morning line up
Title:  Morning line up
Description:  A set of C 420s is on the ready track at Holban Yard, ready to move out with whatever the yardmaster has put together for them. Theyll go east later in the day. Holban, a combination of HOLlis and st alBANs, sat between the two sections of Queens, in a triangle shape, bounded by the Main Line on the north, and the Montauk Branch on the south. The Montauk Branch is seen behind the power, its viaduct crossing over the eastbound Main Line and yard lead just west of the yard at a place called Hillside, where there was an abandoned station. It is used by trains going to Babylon, as well as a few diesel trains going farther east.

Freight power
Title:  Freight power
Description:  The power for the freights running from Holban Yard often sat out on a ready track along the main line. At that time, C420s were the usual power on the road trains, with MP15s handling the lighter work. Heres a pair of Centuries and an MP15 waiting for their next trip east in the evening.

Switching
Title:  Switching
Description:  RF 62 often did extensive switching at Riverhead where there were several sidings and an active team track. Here the power backs down to a hitch with a boxcar as the rest of the train sits on the main. This train did not have radios for the crews, and all moves were coordinated by hand signals.

Meeting an eastbound
Title:  Meeting an eastbound
Description:  The challenge for RF 62/63 was to get out to Riverhead, do whatever work it had to get done along the way, and get back to Pine Aire in time to beat the rush hour. They usually made it, though would start to run up against the leading edge of the rush hour parade as they got west of Ronkonkoma. Heres RF 63 meeting train 254 behind class unit 250 at Deer Park. Almost home.

All Alco meet
Title:  All Alco meet
Description:  The origination point for RF 62, the Riverhead freight, was at a small station in Pine Aire in Suffolk county. The train would switch its cars and a local customer in between rush hour commuter trains, clearing up for each one til the morning rush was over. Here we see RF 62 in the hole for an early morning westbound behind FA 2 606

Quiet at Queens Village
Title:  Quiet at Queens Village
Description:  RF 11, with consecutively numbered C 420's, cools its heels at the Queens Village station as it waits for a late night parade of passenger trains. There will be an eastbound Montauk train, followed by an Oyster Bay train. Once they clear, the freight will get the board to go east to Pine Aire with 64 cars and cabin #64. Tonights train is unusual, having three C 420s. This train almost always got two units.

Waiting for the board
Title:  Waiting for the board
Description:  RF 11 was pulled up to the signal on track 4 at Queens to wait for traffic, not uncommon as there was a flurry of passenger trains around 1 AM every night. Todays train has three C 420s instead of the usual two. Pennsys position light signals were always interesting to watch, especially so at night. Hell get going after the Oyster Bay train clears going east.

Sign of days gone by
Title:  Sign of days gone by
Description:  The building behind RF 63 is the Long Island Potato Exchange, once a huge deal on the Island. As late as the 1950s, solid trains of potatoes would be sent west from Riverhead. Better roads and higher real estate values meant fewer potatoes, and most of them now go by truck. Imagine three or four C 420s and 90 cars of potatoes-what a sight!!

Working the team track
Title:  Working the team track
Description:  Once a common sight in many towns, the team track had become a rare feature. Riverhead still had one(as did Queens Village, though I dont recall seeing any cars spotted there in the 80s), here being switched by RF 62s C 420s. The crews on this train did not get radios, so hand signals were the standard way for the trainmen to communicate. It was a real lesson in old style railroading.

Farm like scene
Title:  Farm like scene
Description:  The east end was once farm land, but by the late 80s, much of it had been sold off for development as real estate values became greater than the agricultural value. Manorville seemed to have escaped that trend even in the late 80s, as this scene of a red house in a rural setting shows. RF 63 rolls past behind the usual pair of C 420s.

Just passing through
Title:  Just passing through
Description:  Youd never know it to see the place now, but Manorville was once an important junction on the LIRR. There was a branch here that split from the Main Line, connecting to the Montauk Branch at Eastport. It was commonly used by trains going to the Hamptons and east. It was abandoned in 1949; Manorville was never the same. RF 63 passes through without even breaking its pace.

Alcos by the coal dock
Title:  Alcos by the coal dock
Description:  A pair of C 420s, now stored since the Ronkonkoma electrification rendered newer diesels available for freight service, pose by the concrete coal dock at Morris Park shop. The Alcos will have a brief reprieve, and return to service for a few more years. The coaling tower has, however, seen its last steam engine. The tracks in the foreground are the Atlantic Branch, which are coming out of the Atlantic Av tunnel, where they have been since just east of Nostrand Av station in Brooklyn. The cars beyond the Alcos are part of the alcohol train, and are equipped to spray an alcohol based chemical on the third rail to keep it from getting iced up in winter.
