Slowing for the switch
Title:  Slowing for the switch
Description:  H SHKC slows to take the switch into the siding at Watts, where it will set off and pick up. The construction in the foreground is for the US 59 widening project, which is now starting work through Watts to connect the 4 lane sections on either side of town.

Taking an approach signal
Title:  Taking an approach signal
Description:  H SHKC passes signal 238.2, which was showing approach as I drove past. Hell go into the siding at Watts, to work the yard there.

Just a little too late
Title:  Just a little too late
Description:  I had gone up to dump recycling-the dumpsters are outside the gates of the transfer station, which is near the Lincoln Av crossing. As I was leaving, I crossed the tracks to see the familiar triple headlights to the north. I beat it to the Main St crossing, hoping the open area would have a little more light, maybe enough to get a decent shot. Even on sports mode, which gave me 1/30 second at F4, but a "film speed" of 1600, the light was too far gone. So it goes. Two up front, two pushing, 80 cars of southbound grain.

Meanwhile
Title:  Meanwhile
Description:  Back at Watts, the 261 train was getting ready to go, but I thought it would be a little while, so grabbed this shot of the power as I came though town.

Not quite
Title:  Not quite
Description:  I caught the head end of the 261 train, now a little less backlit, since the sun had come around some since I left to follow the 262 south. He has the ditch lights on, but was backing up when I left. Wish Id given him five more minutes; he left shortly after this, and would have made for a nice shot on the Illinois River a mile to the north.

Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  I took off south, to find the 262 train had arrived at Watts, and was holding the main. As I drove into town, I heard the detector at MP 238 go off. Crap, hell probably be here before I can catch him in good light. I was right, The head end was already coming up the siding, it was the 261 train, coming in with 80 cars, blocked by its southbound counterpart. Not that it mattered; the angle I had was the "dark" side for both trains. My only hope was the northbound would pull up past the end of the southbound, and I could get him north of the yard office. I lucked out on that one, getting the power just as it peeked out behind the 262, but its ridiculously backlit. Oh well....five minutes faster, Id have had a nicely lit shot near MP 237, south of the yard.
