Down on the farm
Title:  Down on the farm
Description:  One of the most scenic places on the NYSW, indeed in New York, was Bairds farm near Warwick. It was a popular photo spot, and the family was gracious in allowing railfans access. It was a "must do" photo stop for the trip, which we see posed at the farm, along with some of JJ Youngs inflatable cows, imported from Binghamton for the occasion.

Description:  NYSW ran all kinds of excursions. Walter Rich was a railfan, and used the railroad to his advantage to show shippers the facilities, as well as running excursions. Description:  By 1990, the cost, availability, and ease of use had gotten to the point with consumer video equipment that it was no longer the preserve of high tech professionals, and just about anyone with a couple of bucks could get one and use it effectively. The result was, they were everywhere. This one is set up to catch the U&MV trip here at Whitney Point while its owner shoots film. Who would have imagined then that wed be taking video on our phones??

Description:  Most people dont think of Utica as being a "union station" since in their experience it handles only Amtrak. For a period in the 1980s and 90s, it truly fit that description, handling not only Amtrak, but also trains to the 1980 Olympics, and the occasional NYSW excursion. The station is to the far right, out of the photo behind the white building. The ex NYC is to the left of the train; you can see the ex NYC tower just beyond the lead unit. I wonder if anyone took advantage of the connection for this trip.

Description:  A sad testimony to the decline of upstate NY is the number of once busy industrial buildings that have fallen on hard times, or simply just fallen down. The ones that are in good shape make great photo props, though. The U&MV trip passes the Waterville Knitting Mills, a business that long ago went south-literally-with the work most likely now done in China or Mexico.
