New Look
Title:  New Look
Description:  But not for long. The Rock Island had been in bankruptcy since 1964, and by this time was on its last legs. In the mid 70s, a new management team had started a rebranding of the road, now "The Rock", and started painting everything in this blue paint scheme. It was like putting lipstick on a cow, dressing up the look, but it didnt hide the decay underneath. One of the new look gons in eastbound on RF 7 passing Jamaica station.

Yard A
Title:  Yard A
Description:  Yard A at Sunnyside was one of several the LIRR used at that time to handle freight on the west end, others being the float yard near Hunterspoint Av(6th Street, I think), and Fresh Pond. At the time of this photo in 1978, Yard A was quite busy, as can be seen from this photo taken from the No 7 Flushing IRT, which passes over the yard on Queens Blvd. Ten years later, much of the west end freight activity would be centered around Fresh Pond as Yard A lost its prominence due to traffic declining in the Long Island City area.

Not yet
Title:  Not yet
Description:  Another road that would disappear, the P&LE, was still a viable operation in the 1980s, having escaped Conrail in 1976. The next 15 years would bring many changes, and it eventually had most of its traffic dry up. The one time NYC subsidiary-see the NYC herald on the close end of the car-would be acquired by CSX, whose B&O had used it for trackage rights around Pittsburgh for many years. One of its gons is on this westbound on NS at Ft Wayne, with a load of pipe.

EL gon
Title:  EL gon
Description:  As CR predecessor roads faded into memory, it was nice to find some of their equipment still running around. In ELs case, it was mostly hoppers and boxcars, but sometimes something else would show up. In this case, it was a gondola that I caught on LIRR freight RF 60, here at Richmond Hill in Queens, somewhat worse for wear 13 years after the fall, but still out there.

Interesting load
Title:  Interesting load
Description:  This pair of dimensional loads was right behind the power on an inbound BUME. Dont know what these are, but they are loaded on the top of the two depressed center flatcars, which strikes me as an odd way to load, since it does not appear that the loads need the depressed centers.

Never thought Id see this in the 21st Century!!
Title:  Never thought Id see this in the 21st Century!!
Description:  The former LV Sayre shops were, at the time of this photo(and may still be) run by GE Railcar, which did contract rebuilding and wreck repairs. It was a busy place, and some days, ALCG and CGAL set off and picked up significant numbers of cars here. Among the many odd and obscure items that turned up here was a set of Rock Island gons, in full RI lettering and excellent paint. The only thing not RI on these cars were the reporting marks, which were assigned to GE Railcar, and later to Wells Fargo.. Almost a quarter century after Rocks demise, and long after just about everything Rock had disappeared from the American rail scene, who ever would have thought something like this would turn up in Sayre PA??

Description:  Funny how cars move around. This Bay Line(Atlanta & St Andrews Bay) car from a short line in Alabama and Florida, somehow wound up on another short line-well, regional-Mid South, as can be seen from the reporting marks. Steel both ends
Title:  Steel both ends
Description:  The coils on these cars weight about 40,000 lbs each-which is why you only see one of them on a truck trailer-but a coil car can carry four easily. Theyre over the trucks to put less stress on the car, as the wheels support the weight better. This car is on the north bound H train.
