Yard A
Yard A at Sunnyside was one of several the LIRR used at that time to handle freight on the west end, others being the float yard near Hunterspoint Av(6th Street, I think), and Fresh Pond. At the time of this photo in 1978, Yard A was quite busy, as can be seen from this photo taken from the No 7 Flushing IRT, which passes over the yard on Queens Blvd. Ten years later, much of the west end freight activity would be centered around Fresh Pond as Yard A lost its prominence due to traffic declining in the Long Island City area.
