The crowd at Marathon station waits anxiously for the festival train led by 142 as it approaches the station. Note all the heavy coats. Despite the April date-the event was held the last weekend of March or first weekend of April-it's pretty chilly out, temps in the 20's. At least it's not snowing, which has been known to happen. |

How do you water a steam engine. |
Description: |
In the 1990s, with a fire hose. Since steam service facilities are entirely a memory on anything other than a tourist line, one has to improvise to get water in the tank. Mostly this is done with a fire hose, which is equal to the task, and usually available by prior arrangement. Here the ground crew of 142 sets up to fill the tender. |

No its not 1946 |
Description: |
During the Broome County Fair, NYSW ran trips from Whitney point up to the county line near Killawog. During one of these trips for the 1992 fair, a 1936 Buick pulled up to the NY 79 crossing in Lisle just as the train approached. The driver was actually paying attention, and unlike most motorists who go rolling right into your photo in a battered Ford, stopped before getting into the picture. Seeing the chance for an unusual shot, I waved him into the picture for a classic scene. |

Description: |
Really....NYSW ran 142 for short trips during the Broome County Fair, held in Whitney Point. This trip was approaching the NY 79 crossing when the Buick came along. The driver saw several of us there taking photos and stopped. All of us-maybe a half dozen-waved him into the photo, making for this classic. Considering all the cars that ever got into a photo, this is the one we wanted in it-hes the guy that stops. |

Waiting on time |
Description: |
The NYSW ran excursions for the annual Mapathon Maple Festival, starting with a run down from Cortland. Mikado 142 was the star of the train for several years. In 1993, it was brutally cold and snowy-there had been a!20 plus inch snowfall a week earlier-even for the festival, which was notorious for its awful weather. While it made for a challenging chase, steam in the snow made for a great show. |

Along the interstate |
Description: |
Just north of Homer, the NYSW line passes under I 81 and then runs adjacent to the highway for several miles. Its not really a good place to stop, but it can be a good photo location. Taken from the shoulder of I 81 north. |

Across the field |
Description: |
As the line gets closer to Preble, it moves away from the highway, yielding this across the corn shot. Note how 261 dwarfs 142. |
