New platform
Title:  New platform
Description:  One of the improvements Long Island made in the mid 80s was to erect high level platforms at all stations. While this provided access for those in wheelchairs, it also detracted from the historic views of the stations. Here we see the new platform that was just installed at Smithtown as a westbound led by 270 makes its stop as an eastbound, pushed by 274, heads for Port Jefferson

4012 rolls east
Title:  4012 rolls east
Description:  The mid day weekend Montauk train was 4012. Saturdays train was nothing special, but Sundays moved the parlors that would bring the weekenders home back to Montauk after servicing in Jamaica, and was usually a long train, 12-14 cars, and got a pair of GP 38s. Here it is rolling through the east end of Queens interlocking and past Bellerose station.

Not just another rush hour
Title:  Not just another rush hour
Description:  Any time there was a big snowfall, the LIRR essentially annulled its schedules, and ran everything as all stop extras. This night was one of those, with 14" of snow falling in the region. The weather kept everyone scrambling, as trains ran in ways they usually did not. Thus we have this Port Jefferson train running east on track 1, making a Mineola stop before heading on to Hicksville and up the Port Jeff Branch. Another eastbound is approaching in the distance, and will be running on this train's blocks. It will be a long night for everyone.
