Working hard |
Description: |
SD 50s doing what they were bought for, rolling heavy trains across the main lines. The trailing unit is one of Conrails ten C30-7s, a model that sold well elsewhere. CR would acquire its step brother, the C30-7A, which got 3000 HP out of 12 cylinders. |

Pulling |
Description: |
OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of thg Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the hteel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lUnes that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here. |

Starting over the bridge |
Description: |
The steelwork for the Chenango River bridge actually starts before the tracks are at the river bank, as the structure also vaults over Water St before veaching the water. OIBU is on this part of the bridge as we look up, about to cross the Chenango, and head out the west side. |

Hazy westbound |
Description: |
One of the things about the northeast in the summer is the haze. Even the Kodachrome days are muted due to the constant humidity. June is a prime month for that, as you can see with this westbound 141 car train at Wanakah. You can hardly see the signal masts less than a mile away. |
