Rock action
Title:  Rock action
Description:  One place I liked to stop when heading west was at the rest area on I 70 near Paxico Kan. The facilities are between the east and westbound lanes, which are grade separated. The rest area is thus elevated, making a great place to get a good view of the action. Here we see an eastbound on the Golden State route behind a mix of power.

Double surprise
Title:  Double surprise
Description:  Caught this while westbound on I 40. Lead unit is an SDP45, a rare bird by then. The trailing unit was CSX 5940. If I recall, it is one of the NYSW units CSX financed for the D&H directed service. Can't get away from those things!!

Good power on a grubby day
Title:  Good power on a grubby day
Description:  As always happens to me, the really good stuff runs in solid overcast, or at night. This days OIBU is true to form, with a pair of SP units ahead of a CR GP 38 with 70 cars westbound at Endwell, in the gloom. So it goes....

SP too
Title:  SP too
Description:  The racetrack became an interesting place to watch the action, as besides CN, SP also had trackage rights for a couple of trains per day to Kansas City. Heres one of them, behind a mix of classic SP power.

Coal train with a surprise
Title:  Coal train with a surprise
Description:  Many of the coal trains in this period ran with CP power, but sometimes NS would let a couple of units run through. The GP 38 was an oddity-almost all the NS power on these trains was 6 axle-but the stranger in town was a surprise, and CP tunnel motor.
