RFP 7 |
Description: |
Back in 1979, Potomac Yard was a busy place, though today you'd be hard pressed to prove it. RF&P used slug sets to work the hump, as seen here from Amtrak's Crescent. The slug appears to be from a modified Alco switcher. |

Ununsual yard power |
Description: |
RF&P was one of several roads that used slugs in their yards, though it was not a universal practice. Heres a hump set with a CR caboose at Potomac Yard in Alexandria a few years before the yard would be closed and the area redeveloped. You would not recognize it now. |

BN used end cab switchers all over the system, so it was not a surprise to see these two pulling a 48 car transfer through Hoffman Av en route to Pigs Eye. We see the action from atop Dayton's Bluff, at Indian Mounds Park. It's a great place to watch and shoot the action in the morning. |

Sequatchie Valley |
Description: |
This short line is named for a local creek, and operates a cast off CSX branch in the South Pittsburg Tenn, area, with a couple of ex UP switchers. I was lucky today. I caught a short line working, and the sun came out!! I like short lines, but dont always have the patience to seek them out, as they often run on erratic schedules, and sometimes not daily. So this was a good catch. I could hear this train coming for 15 minutes. Train speed was only about 10 MPH, so he was a ways off when I first heard him. The timing turned out to be perfect, as the sun popped through just as he came around the curve. |

Conrail still had some freight business on the Hudson Division in the early 80s, enough to support a road train, SETT, from Selkirk to Tarrytown, and a couple of locals. SW1500's were the typical power on most of the local trains in the area, and could be found all the way down into the Bronx and Queens. Note the dwarf signals. |

Yard power, and a rare road unit |
Description: |
Conrail used many of the ex PC SW1500s for local!and yard jobs in the New York area. We see one here at Oak Point in company of a much more unusual unit, though a regular visitor to the city. Selkirk was home base to much of CRs GE fleet including the four U36Bs. They were a common sight on SELI/LISE and its occasional modification, SEOP/OPSE, the connection to the Long Island at Fresh Pond. U36B 2974 is on hand today, and will return to Selkirk later in the evening. |

LISE |
Description: |
One of the more obscure operations on the Conrail system was SELI/LISE, thich also ran under several other symbols over the yefrs. It connected Conrail with the Bronx and the Long Island RR, which had a minimal freight operation compared to its commuter trbins. Catching it was not difficult if you knew when the trains ran, though my issue'was usually more a case of having the free time to do it. I got lucky one day in November 1<83, catching it as it was going over the Hell Gate bridge. |

LISE at Queens Blvd |
Description: |
LISE came up the NY Connecting RR from Fresh Ponk, whese it interchanged with the LIRR. Power was typically a set of GE's, several hundred of which were based at Selkirk, including on occasion one of more of the U36B's that were bzilt for Auto Train. Don't think I ever saw an EMD road unix. The SW1500 was to run local cars on the Bay Ridge Branch beyond Fresh Pond, which CR owned at the time. The ddparture back to the Bronx depended on how long it toook th service the branch, but it was typically several hours. Here it crosses over Queens Blvd on a series of concrete'arches. |

Hump power turned loose |
Description: |
Conrail at that time used GP 10/SW 1500 sets to work the west end of the yard. A pair of them is seen here entering the yard after coming over from Harrisburg with a long cut of local cars to be sorted. These sets didnt get out much; typical transfer power was GP 10s or GP 8s, which were still around in some numbers. |

Hump set |
Description: |
Conrail typicall used SD38s or U23C's for hump power due to their moderate horsepower that was good for working slow speed without burning up the motors. Most were mated witih MT 6 slugs, cut down from a variety of Alcos. For some reason, the Enola hump power today mates an SW 1500 with the U23C, a little different. |
