Into the yard |
Description: |
NYSW in the 1980s acquired the Rahway Valley and former B&O line to Staten Island. Base for these operations was the small B&O facility in Cranford, adjacent to the ex CNJ, over whom B&O had trackage rights. NYSW 120 has just returned from working the RV, and has crossed over the CNJ-now NJ Transit-main at Excee tower, and will be taking the switch into the yard. This was a much busier place in CNJ days, as evidenced by the signal bridge in the distance. It was then four tracks, and a place where a train could cross over all of them. B&O and Reading passenger trains passed here, as did their freights. |

Excee Tower |
Description: |
Excee tower, named for its telegraph call sign, XC, controlled the junction of the CNJ and Rahway Valley, as well as access to the small B&O yard south of the main, which also was the access to the B&Os Staten Island Rapid Transit, though most freight service was to the Port Ivory area, a freight only part of the SIRT. NYSW 120 has just come off the RV and is crossing over to reach the yard, where it will tie up. |

It was unusual to see these two units together, especially since 120 spent most of its time in Jersey. I caught them together at the Binghamton shop. An RS 3 and SD 45 are peeking out from behind these two. The variety then was amazing. |

EL station switcher |
Description: |
Erie Lackawanna had several SW 9s that switched the Hoboken terminal. These units stayed on in that duty after EL went into Conrail and eventually wound up on NJ Transit. They got repainted into the ELs U34 scheme, but not til after EL was long gone. All youd need are some EL diamonds and spell out "Erie Lackawanna" on the hood, and youd have the perfect complement to the EL U34CH fleet. |

Familiar face |
Description: |
There were a couple of SW 9s that worked at Hoboken during the EL years. Both stayed on after CR startup, and on into NJ Transit. In 1978, this one was still in its old owners colors, thought the name had been painted out. They could have left the number, which was unchanged, in its original typeface. |

Journal Square |
Description: |
The area near Journal Square had a lot of activity. The tracks to the left are the PATH station and yard, a large complex that had car shops and MOW, among other things. The two tracks at right are the ex PRR Passaic & Harsimus Branch, which went from Kearny out to the piers at Harsimus Cove. By this time it was a freight yard, but until 1961, some passenger trains terminated there at a ferry to Manhattan, though not many after Penn Station in NY was opened. We see a long cut of cars behind an ex EL SW 9 about to pass the station on the P&H, heading toward the waterfront yard. Note the catenary above the SW. Conrail was still running electrified freight here at the time, and it was possible to see GG 1's, E 44's and ex NH/VGN E 33's here. |

Well, maybe. Could also be going to North Bergen, but my bet is Croxton, which handled a lot more general freight than the ex NYC yard, which had become largely an intermodal and auto rack yard. Our SW takes the connection at Marion Jct after dropping its train at Harsimus Cove. Now, off to get some baseball cards.... |
