Splitting the semaphores
Title:  Splitting the semaphores
Description:  The Tier was known for its many Erie RR era semaphores. There were at least two pairs, one at Arkport, about five miles west of Hornell, rarely seen due to the walk in nature of their location; and this pair at Tioga Center, which were adjacent to NY 17C, and easy to photograph. ABBU, running wrong main, passes between them on its way west.

ABBU at E Glass
Title:  ABBU at E Glass
Description:  This photo shows the area on the east side of Corning that was CP E Glass for much of Conrails existence. The relay case can be seen to the left of track 1 at the crossovers. The lead to the Corning Secondary is the track going off to the left at the lower left corner of the frame. The E Glass/N Glass/W Glass complex formed a wye that connected the Corning Secondary and the Southern Tier Line. The Corning Secondary had been the NYC line along Seneca Lake to Geneva and a connection with the Water Level Route, now Conrails Chicago Line. Trains such as SYEN would come down this line, taking the W Glass leg of the wye and roll through Gang Mills Yard, where there was a connection back to the old alignment on the east side of the Tioga River. That line went down the Grand Canyon of PA to a connection with the Pennsy at Jersey Shore PA on the Buffalo Line. This was part of the 1951 realignment that took both the Central and the Erie out of the street in downtown Corning, a route now followed by NY 352, locally Dennison Pkwy. To the left of the existing track is an empty right of way. This was the DLW, which parallelled the Erie here, having returned to its own line just east of here after the 1959 facilities coordination, whereby the DLW abandoned its main as a through route from the west side of Binghamton. Here at Gibson it returned to its own line to reach Bath, Cohocton, and Groveland on its way to Buffalo. That line would be downgraded, and mostly abandoned after the 1960 EL merger. Prior to 1959, the DLW ran next to the Erie from here to Horseheads, where the lines separated to enter Elmira.

Rare find
Title:  Rare find
Description:  There is a lot of power here at the shop, but the oddball is C&O 3302, a U30C, one of a very few 6 axle GEs on the C&O. The pair of U30B's is also a nice find. The place was a veritable museum of 1960's motive power.

Description:  A Kansas City Power & Light train has arrived at Knoche yard, and will shortly head to the power plant, which is adjacent to the yard. U30C's were still fairly common then-I saw quite a few on BN coal trains.

Coal down the river
Title:  Coal down the river
Description:  An eastbound coal train rolls through Hoffman Av just as an auto rack train clears. Look at those GE's smoke!!This is one of the busiest spots in the area, located where CPs ex MILW line and BNSFs ex CB&Q line head east down the Mississippi River. Theyll shortly end up on opposite sides, but here they are together. Its a show.

Classic power
Title:  Classic power

Still around
Title:  Still around
Description:  U30Cs were getting hard to find by the late 80s. UP had retired most of theirs, as had Santa Fe, though BNs soldiered on in coal service. D&Hs own were long gone by this time. This CSX unit strayed up from the south, finding its way to East Binghamton on PYRP. I can count on the fingers of one hand the U30Cs I saw here, so this was a good catch.

Stuck in the middle
Title:  Stuck in the middle
Description:  A set of NYSW power has an unusual visitor in the midst of its B 40s, a GE sister that is now a rare find. Interestingly, all these B 40's would soon wind up on CSX, which had financed them.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  Even with all the odd and obscure power coming through Binghamton, this was a surprise. Big GE's were almost unknown on these trains, so to catch not only a C30-7, but a U30C, which were becoming rare by then, on a stack was really a treat. SLN 3(DHT 9 on Conrail) takes to the Tier for its run to Buffalo.
