Long way home

A ghost from the past
Title:  A ghost from the past
Description:  A D&H Belden Hill detour train pulls up the connector from the D&H Penn Division to Conrails Southern Tier Line at Jefferson Jct behind a mix of power that looks deceptively like a vision from the past. The reality is that the patch paint over the former road name has worn off, allowing the prior owners name to bleed through. Nobody was complaining!!

Through the snow
Title:  Through the snow
Description:  BUEB rolls 78 cars east toward Binghamton in the snowy fields of western NY, seen from a local road bridge near Dalton. The power was common in those days. The SD26 is a recent acquisiton of Guilford, and will ultimately be painted Springfield Terminal. As if that wasn't enough heritage, the third unit is an ex Rock Island U25B.

Not exactly dashing through the snow
Title:  Not exactly dashing through the snow
Description:  But making decent enough time. A telephoto view of BUEB rolling east at Dalton behind the kind of power mix only Guilford could concoct. At least the B&M unit is leading.

U25
Title:  U25
Description:  By 1984, U25Bs were getting hard to find. There were still some in service on the L&N. I was able to find on in Lexington, in the rain of course.

U 25B's and a U 33B
Title:  U 25B's and a U 33B
Description:  In May of 1983, Tri State Chapter NRHS ran a trip on the West Shore to Selkirk. On arrival at Selkirk, we passed the dead line, which had a lot of interesting items. These were all taken from the train through those wonderful Lexan windows, so the quality may not be so hot, but the subjects are worth a little grubbiness.

Not much difference
Title:  Not much difference
Description:  At this point in Conrails history, there was still a lot of equipment in predecessor paint schemes, and it was not uncommon to see solid sets of un repainted power, though most non PC units had at least been renumbered if not patch painted. Since the PC people largely ran the show, their numbering plan held sway. As such, most PC power did not need to be renumbered, so you were more likely to see untouched PC power than anything else. An example is here at Poughkeepsie, where we have not only this U25B, but a transfer caboose still in PC garb. There's also something in NYC lettering in the yard, though I can't see enough of it to identify. All this is in the shadow of the former New Haven Poughkeepsie Bridge, out of service since a fire in May 1974, and now a pedestrian walkway over the river.
