Pulling them out
Title:  Pulling them out
Description:  A power set comes out of the yard with a cut of cars to roll south. Its train is waiting on the main. The two SD 35's were common on road freights at this time, along with either an SD 40 or 45. Most of the trains I saw that day had some combination of SD 35's, 40's, and 45's, typically in three unit sets, almost all of them running long hood forward which was standard Southern practice.

Thunder in the storm
Title:  Thunder in the storm
Description:  A southbound behind a long hood forward SD 45 roll past the yard office in a thunderstorm, making a little thunder of its own as it passes. Hell pull down about 60 carlengths, and the head brakie will pull the cut lever, allowing the cars to be pulled ahead and set off in the yard.

On into the night
Title:  On into the night
Description:  Well after dark, a southbound works the yard. The traffic here was not monumental-no one will confuse this line with the UP in Nebraska-but it was steady. I was there about 15 hours, and saw 15 or so trains. I didnt keep notes in those days(silly me, theyd be really helpful now, 35 years later), so dont have an exact count, but it seemed like there was a train every hour or so.

SD 35
Title:  SD 35
Description:  A unit that was fairly common, but faded quickly by the early 80's, probably due to its having the 567 engine, was the SD35. Southern used them on its road trains, usually in combination with a pair of SD40's, or in a mix of 40's and 45's. Here we see 3097J as middle uinit of a train making a set out at Pomona yard.

Title:  Typical power set
Description:  I saw a number of trains while waiting for the northbound Crescent. Most had power sets like this one, a pair of SD40/-2's and an SD 35 or 45.

CR once had 50 of these
Title:  CR once had 50 of these
Description:  CRs SD 35s came from two previous owners, the PRR and CNJ. The nose of one of the ex Pennsy units is seen in a grab shot from a passing PATH train near Marion Jct-note the curving track at right. That connects to the ex NYC North Bergen yard. I once saw an SD 40 take that curve. It was an experience.

Head end helpers
Title:  Head end helpers
Description:  Sometimes, due to train make up, the helpers were put up front. Typically this happened with Trailvans, but some other trains got them as well. Here we see a TV train on its way uphill.

Turning the power
Title:  Turning the power
Description:  This power set was working through the plant at Fostoria, and would shortly head to the yard on the ex B&O Chicago main to pick up train 397 for Detroit. Were looking east on the NS ex NKP line. That's the B&O Fostoria tower at left, which was still active at the time.

Lease unit
Title:  Lease unit
Description:  This ex Chessie SD35 was the trailing unit on 397. I never saw another TORCO unit. I have wondered since who they were, and what became of that engine, though by now its probably long scrapped.
