Pacing on US 20
Title:  Pacing on US 20
Description:  Chicago Central ran their trains at a pretty good clip for a regional that had taken over a hand me down unwanted division of a Class 1. Dont recall the speed here, but I do remember having to hustle to catch these guys. I was on US 20 near Winthrop following this 50 car eastbound. I think it was train 30.

Why the railroad exists
Title:  Why the railroad exists
Description:  A Chicago Central train passes grain bins at Jesup(thanks to Dylan for the correction. I had it as Winthrop). The reason for the railroads existence is plain here in Iowa. Every town has one of these, some of them quite large.

Wooden bridge
Title:  Wooden bridge
Description:  Living in an urban environment with a lot of high density rail lines, I was used to seeing steel bridges. Thus, I was intrigued to see as many wood pile trestles as there were on this line. Heres a CC eastbound crossong one of them near Jesup IA.

Interesting yard power
Title:  Interesting yard power
Description:  A GP 40-2 and a GP 10 work at the east end of Gang Mills yard, cleared onto the eastbound main from the yard lead as DABU rolls in from the west. The GP 40 was not unusual here. We saw lots of them in all kinds of service, from locals to stack trains. The GP 10, on the other hand, was something of a novelty, as they tended to stay down toward Enola and eastern PA. We rarely saw them on the Tier.

Hump power turned loose
Title:  Hump power turned loose
Description:  Conrail at that time used GP 10/SW 1500 sets to work the west end of the yard. A pair of them is seen here entering the yard after coming over from Harrisburg with a long cut of local cars to be sorted. These sets didnt get out much; typical transfer power was GP 10s or GP 8s, which were still around in some numbers.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  Conrail had 100 units they designated GP 10, rebuilt from the several hundred GP 9s inherited from its component roads at start up. Typically, these were found in eastern PA, though sometimes elsewhere in the system. Work trains on the Tier tended to get B23-7s, U23Bs, and GP 38s or 40s for power, so it was unusual to find one of these GP 10s at Waverly on a work extra picking up old ties. It was nice to hear the mellow 567 sound as it worked past. Check out the railfan chase vehicle at left, and how about the side of that building??CR

Rock remnant
Title:  Rock remnant
Description:  After the Rock Island went bust in 1980, much of it returned to nature, but a few parts took on a second life where there was enough traffic to support operation. One such place was on the Choctaw Route in western Oklahoma, where segments of the Rock and some other roads castoffs became part of an operation called FarmRail. A couple of their ex Illinois Central diesels sit near the old Rock station in Elk City.
