Getting a trim |
Description: |
The yard engines in the various hump yard on the Conrail system were medium horsepower six axle units, either U23Cs or SD 38s, which had good adhesion, but didnt need a lot of raw power. At Selkirk, where most of the GE power was assigned(Selkirk was known as the GE captial of the world for a time) this meant U23Cs. We see one working as trim unit in the eastbound bowl. |

Hump set |
Description: |
Conrail typicall used SD38s or U23C's for hump power due to their moderate horsepower that was good for working slow speed without burning up the motors. Most were mated witih MT 6 slugs, cut down from a variety of Alcos. For some reason, the Enola hump power today mates an SW 1500 with the U23C, a little different. |

Trim power |
Description: |
Conrail used U23Cs at Enola to work the east end of the yard, trimming bowl tracks and pulling cars out for the departure tracks. Here are four of them waiting for the next move. Conrail had not run an electric train in five years at this point, but there are still a lot of wires over the east end of Enola. |

Pulling out the racks |
Description: |
The yard trim engines have a cut of auto racks in hand as they work the west end of Enola. This was a common power set for Enola, which for some reason seemed not to get the SD 38/MT6 combination found elsewhere. |

Trimmer |
Description: |
Conrail used a variety of units in trim service at yards, and had a group of U23Cs that saw most of the action. Heres one in the fog at Selkirk. |

Coal on the River Line |
Description: |
The River Line, the ex NYC West Shore, was known during Conrail years as a freight and intermodal conduit. There was some coal traffic on the line, for an Orange-Rockland power plant at Roseton. One of those trains, UAM 4, is rolling though North Bergen behind a set of power only CR would put on a coal train. |

Getting colorful |
Description: |
OIBU heads west at Southport as the fall color comes out. The second unit is a real surprise, as the U23Cs were almost exclusively yard engines. Must have been working its way to a new assignment. |
