The only way to ride |
Description: |
If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach Elberon, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL. |

Es into the night |
Description: |
I rode the Broadway to Chicago in 1978. At the time, it was still on its traditional route from New York to Harrisburg via Zoo Tower in Philly, changing engines at Harrisburg. We had just completed the engine change, the Es now coupled up in place of GG 1 4932 which had brought the train in from New York. Now it was off into the Allegheny darkness as we tackled Horseshoe Curve and the moutain railroad that the ex Pennsy still was. We rounded Horseshoe around 2330, and got into Pitt around 0330. I was amazed at how much traffic there was on that line, everything from coal-lots of it-to general freight, to intermodal. Even in the chaos of Conrail start up, it was an amazing piece of railroading. |

Es, Fs and washboards |
Description: |
The engine tracks at New Haven have a couple of F 40s and a lone E 8 ready to take the parade of Boston trains east-this is long before the electrification to Boston. A group of old New Haven "washboards" so named for their fluted stainless side panels, and now in MOW service, adds a decidedly New Haven flavor to the scene. |

More than just commuters |
Description: |
Rock Island had stayed out of Amtrak at the beginning in 1971, largely because it lacked the funds to buy in. Thus, it still ran the two remaining trains of the once proud fleet of Rockets it had once stabled, and which ran til the end in March 1980. These were down to a couple of cars and an E 8, as in this view of the Quad Cities Rocket, ready for its 6:15 departure, as a Joliet train waits on the adjacent track with an F 40, just arrived as a replacement for the variety of E units-mostly E 8s, but a few E 7s, and the sole remaining E 6 in service in the US. The RTA unit is named for Rock on line community Tinley Park. |

Monett mural |
Description: |
The folks in Monett, MO, a junction town on the Frisco Cherokee Sub-where it met the Sixth Sub, todays Arkansas & Missouri, the main line now BNSF, painted this mural on a downtown building. I think it was done in 2019-hence the engine number. There was an SLSF 2019, an E 8 named in Friscos series of thoroughbreds, in this case, Cavalcade. Nice to see it memorialized so prominently. |

Bay Head train |
Description: |
A Bay Head train makes its stop at Red Bank. Note the CNJ style signals, and the dwarf on track 2. It protects the no longer extant switch to the northbound main on the CNJ Southern Division. |

Last run |
Description: |
A trip was run over the CNJ just prior to a section of it being pulled up near Phillipsburg to accomodate construction of I 78. The Phillipsburg station area had some issues with clear areas at the station site, so the trip was run to Easton PA, where riders were able to get off for a photo stop. We see the lead unit head on at Easton. |

Good looking train |
Description: |
The train was posed on the ex LV bridge for photos. The handrails on the ex CNJ bridge are just barely visible to the left of the lead unit, seen through the trees. The LV bridge was ultimately determined to be deficient, while the CNJ bridge was in much better shape, and it was decided that the Lehigh Line would be swung over to the CNJ alignment and over that bridge, and the right of way realigned on the Jersey side. This is the route NS uses today. |

LV station |
Description: |
Almost. The station here was demolished not long after the end of passenger service in 1961, but the platforms remained. The site was used by Tri State to drop riders for the photo op when they backed the train out onto the brodge, just around the curve out of sight. |

Es waiting for the rush |
Description: |
One of the things I would do in that era was take either the PATH train to Newark, which yielded a good view of the storage tracks for the commuter trains, or ride the ex DLW out of Hoboken to Newark, which had a view of the engine tracks at Kearny. This day, it was a PATH trip. Going through Harrison, there was this pair of Es on a train that would go to Bay Head during the evening rush |
