R 1 interior |
Description: |
There were several R 1/9 cars in the museum-in addition to the many still in service-though the museum cars were nicely restored. This is a shot of the interior, which is configured much like the BMT "D" cars. These had four doors on each side, as opposed to the Ds, which had three larger doors. |

Successor to a proud history |
Description: |
As the northeast rail scene imploded, it became obvious to the states that assistance would be needed to continue the various commuter services that were provided by the railroads, who were taking a loss on them. Mostly it was PC, but also Reading, CNJ and EL were also in the mix. In Philadelphia, it was SEPTA who took on that mantle. An ex Pennsy car is at 30th St, no longer jith a Keystone, but with the double arrow of the commuter authority. |

Dreadnought |
Description: |
When it came to transit cars, the R1/9 series was serious business. Those things were built to take on anything, as this photo shows. This is the J train at Marcy Av on the Broadway line in Brooklyn. Next stop is Delancey and Essex on the other side of the Williamsburg Bridge. |

Warm glow |
Description: |
One of the appealing things about the older cars is the use of incandescent bulbs. They give off a much warmer light than fluorescents. Even in a 40 year old subway car, it has fn inviting appeal. This is the K train at 57 St/6 Av. I miss those old cars. |

Small GE |
Description: |
This little GE was working at the Sumirail plant in Elmira Heights, where NYC Transit Authority R 42s were being rebuilt. It is taking a car out to the test track-note the third rail on the near track. Oddly, the cars when finished were shipped on a low boy trailer over the road. |

Essex St on the BMT |
Description: |
These were taken on what was most likely an ERA trip with the IRT Low V cars. The TA had a museum set that they would charter for various groups, running to different points on the system. Since the IRT cars were only 9 feet wide, they could go anywhere, and did. This is a shot of them at Essex St on the BMT M line. Thats my brother John on the platform, age 9 at the time. |

A pair of IRT Low V cars, so named because they ran on 570 volts DC, rather than on the 600 volts the other cars used, sit at the platform at the museum. |

Patriotic colors |
Description: |
A set of the normally green and white CTA cars has been painted for the Bicentennial. Now two years after the big celebration, quite a few cars still carried their festive paint schemes, such as this set on Lake St. I found it interesting that CTA was running two car trains. In New York, where I lived, they never ran anything shorter than four cars, which alleviated the problem of a train getting "stranded" going through a gap in third rail access while negotiating switches. |

There were still some cars around that had not been repainted once the Bicentennial was over two years earlier. A set of them stops at Clark St on the Lake St L. |

R 36 |
Description: |
This is the interior of one of the Flushing Lines R36 cars. They were delivered just ahead of the 1964/65 Worlds Fair in a unique blue and gray scheme. Most cars were married pairs, with a group of singles to accommodate the 11 car trains that ran on the line. This is one of the singles, 9306 at the Transit Museum. The interior is much like any other IRT car of the era. |
