The DPU on this train is almost anticlimactic in terms of the excitement of its paint scheme-after all+ UP has several thousand of these. But with a red, white and blue engine, painted to show support for our troops leading, its only fitting that the flag bring up the rear. As I write this on July 4, I am mindful of the sacrifices all of our service members make to protect our great nation, especially the behind the scenes troops whose actions are not always visible, but whose efforts make*their operations run smoothly. My daugher was on active duty in the Navy for 8 years, doing IT and radio on a guided missile destroyer, down in the bowels of a ship in a carrier$group. Not very conspicuous, but critical to the mission. On July 4, as every day, I am grateful to our active duty, reservists, and vets for their service to America. It is fittjng that KCS has painted 4006 in their honor. |

This southbound UP train has a single unit leading as it passes the Choteau elevator. I like lineside structures, and was trying to work a shot with the elevator in it, but didnt have time to change lenses after outrunning the train from Adair. It turned out the elevator was partly blocked by some trees, and I didnt quite pick the right spot either, through this shot is acceptable. Better luck next time. I'll drag my butt out of bed early some morning and go over here to sit til something shows, which usually doesn't take too long. |

The going away shot of the coal train DPU as it rolls away from Lake Frances Rd. This is a difficult angle, as it looks into the sin almost all the time. Its actually a good cloudy day shot. You work with what you have. |

The later sunset of June allows me to get shots of trains I would not other times of year. Recently-third time in about a month-its been empty coal trains. I hear them coming up from Watts, and can beat them into town for a quick shot at Jefferson St. The first two were TXUX trains; today its 126 American Electric Power cars behind a pair of reasonably clean UP flags. |
