Elegant scheme |
Description: |
The Southern paint scheme was quite attractive, and lent an air of class to their operation. |

Southern power rolls |
Description: |
A set of Southern SD 40s rolls south through a pair of NW signals with a grain train on the NW Shenandoah Sub, showing the effects of the NS merger four years earlier. Long hood forward was standard practice on the Southern and N&W, so the leader is not running backward. |

Coal with N&W and SOU power |
Description: |
A coal train bound for the Norfolk pier has three units-including a GP 35 of all things-and 223 cars. NS would take coal trains out of the mining districts, run them to Crewe, and combine them into monster loaded trains for the pier. Im told they ran 300 car empty trains back to Crewe, but did not see one. |

On into the night |
Description: |
Well after dark, a southbound works the yard. The traffic here was not monumental-no one will confuse this line with the UP in Nebraska-but it was steady. I was there about 15 hours, and saw 15 or so trains. I didnt keep notes in those days(silly me, theyd be really helpful now, 35 years later), so dont have am exact count, but it seemed like there was a train every hour or so. |

A northbound rolls past the Charlottesville station with a former Southern GP 50 leading a set of SDs still in their tuxedoes. Classic Southern signals abound. |

Ford empties |
Description: |
Train AFOB ran from the auto ramp at Ayer Mass through onto NS, forwarding mostly auto racks to Bellevue Oh, where they were sent to various midwestern assembly plants. Here it is sitting on the Buffalo Runner next to the old D&H station, waiting for a new crew to head to Buffalo and a ride on the ex NKP. NS power was typical, and usually ran through to Ayer. |
