New paint for an old classic
Title:  New paint for an old classic
Description:  One of Southern's hi hood GP 30s is in the yard at Manassas, part of the consist for the Strasburg Turn. NS did not repaint a lot of the older power that was likely to be retired, so it was something of a surprise to find this. I never saw another NS painted GP 30, either SOU or NW.

Still Southern
Title:  Still Southern
Description:  A Southern peculiarity, a GP 35 on Alco trucks, is one of three Southern units on the power for the Strasburg Turn. The third unit in this set still carries its C of G number too.

Still Southern, mostly
Title:  Still Southern, mostly
Description:  Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP.

Four axle power
Title:  Four axle power
Description:  Most of the through freights I saw this day had six axle power. One that didn't was this one, which came south with four 4 axle units. Interestingly for you numbercrunchers, the two units to the right had opposing numbers. Note GP 30, number 2625, and ahead of it, GP 35 2526. A GE rounds out the shot.

Hi hood GP 35
Title:  Hi hood GP 35
Description:  This high short hood GP 35 was in consist on a southbound, making a set out and pick up at Pomona Yard. Hope the folks in the power departmenu didnt get it confused with the following unit: same numbers, different order.

Left on the main
Title:  Left on the main
Description:  Two uaits work their set off into Pomona Yard as their train waits on the main. The Amtrak station at that time was at the yard office, with e small ticket window and waiting room. I got there around 1 PM that day, waiting for the northbound Crescent, which would arrive around 3:30 AM. I had a front row seat for hours of action ap trains stopped to make ~et offs and pick ups, and the yard engines did their thing in between. It was a great place to see the action.

Strasburg power
Title:  Strasburg power
Description:  The power that was on the Strasburg Local that day is now back in Manassas, tied up for tomorrows activity. Note the type B trucks under the GP 35's, the result of being used from trade in Alcos. For those of you who remember when MTV used to actually run music videos, youll recall Steve Winwood had a song out in the early 80s called "Back In the High Life Again" that featured a Southern Railway train switching. This was the train, the rail sequences shot here in Manassas.
