Still Southern, mostly
Title:  Still Southern, mostly
Description:  Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP.

All Southern power
Title:  All Southern power
Description:  This was the last shot on the roll, hence the short frame. An all Southern power set seen at DeButts Yard from an NS 611 fan trip to Chattanooga as the light fades.

Only two
Title:  Only two
Description:  Only two roads got hi hood GP 30s, exactly the ones youd think. Here is one of Southerns units, still in its tuxedo paint scheme. Its the trailing unit on this short local at AF, but good to see one of these anywhere.

Classic look
Title:  Classic look
Description:  Almost 6 years into the NS merger, there were still a lot of diesels that had not been repainted. A pair in the classic Southern tuxedo scheme work this local headed for Potomac Yard at AF.

Hi hood GP 30
Title:  Hi hood GP 30
Description:  One feature both N&W and Southern shared was ordering their second generation power with short high hoods. On most units, it made for a brick like appearance; on the GP 30's, which both roads rostered, it was really different. Here's a short hood view of one of Southern's units on one of two trains working Greensboro.

Four axle power
Title:  Four axle power
Description:  Most of the through freights I saw this day had six axle power. One that didn't was this one, which came south with four 4 axle units. Interestingly for you numbercrunchers, the two units to the right had opposing numbers. Note GP 30, number 2625, and ahead of it, GP 35 2526. A GE rounds out the shot.

Strasburg power
Title:  Strasburg power
Description:  The power that was on the Strasburg Local that day is now back in Manassas, tied up for tomorrows activity. Note the type B trucks under the GP 35's, the result of being used from trade in Alcos. For those of you who remember when MTV used to actually run music videos, youll recall Steve Winwood had a song out in the early 80s called "Back In the High Life Again" that featured a Southern Railway train switching. This was the train, the rail sequences shot here in Manassas.
