Headed west on the ex NKP
Title:  Headed west on the ex NKP
Description:  I didnt get to Buffalo much-living in NY City, it was 420 miles just to get there, a little out of reach for having one day off a week-so I did not get to see the action there or west. It was something of a novelty to see a train I had seen in Binghamton, now on the western leg of its journey. Heres AFOB, the Ayer Mass to Bellevue train, getting out of town for a run over the ex NKP to Ohio. It will be a quick trip. This shot also gives a good overview of the industrial part of the city, with grain elevators all along the lake front south of the city, demonstrating Buffalo's prominence as a grain milling center. The huge elevator taking up much of the right background was built by Continental Grain, and was the largest in the world at the time it was built. Continental was notable for being the biggest shipper on the NYC. The girder bridge just beyond the signals was the DLW City Branch, to its Buffalo passenger station. The open drawbridge in the distance is the ex NKP; the NS train will use the adjacent ex Buffalo Creek bridge, which was once owned owned jointly by the Erie and LV.

Big westbound
Title:  Big westbound
Description:  This westbound had 104 cars rolling through town on the ex NKP. We see it hitting the B&O diamond. Interestingly, the same power was on a westbound I shot in Buffalo a week earlier.

DPU rolling north
Title:  DPU rolling north
Description:  The DPU on the AEPX train rolls away from me at Davidson Rd as it disappears into the for once colorful trees. An eastern visitor aids in pushing the 127 empty cars north.

Lite power north
Title:  Lite power north
Description:  I finally made it to the recycle station Thursday around 1300. No sooner than I pulled up to the roll offs, the radio went off. A northbound UP unit was calling the signal at South Siloam Springs. AEPX empty coal train, I thought, since they typically get UP power. It turned out to be a seven unit lite power move. I went over to the team track, since that would likely be the bewst lighting I could manage at that time of daY.

On the way with the new partner
Title:  On the way with the new partner
Description:  The trailing unit of the lite power move rolls between the signals, a merger partner CP unit taking the rear position. Of these diesels, this is the second visit(at least) of NS 8068, which I caught on an empty AEPX train earlier in the week.

First train
Title:  First train
Description:  My wife got me a Canon T8i for Christmas, to replace a failing T1i-its a dozen years old, and probably obsolete by now(unlike my Nikkormats, which are 60 years old, and still work just fine. Too bad no more Kodachrome). So I took it out hoping to catch something, usually theres a southbound Q train in the afternoon. The Q train never materialized, but this empty grain train finally did, just as the light was going. I caught it at Y City Rd in Decatur, with enough sun to get some glint. So, this is my first train shot with the new camera. Looks like it performed well in iffy conditions. A trio of diesels, including an NS GE, roll 105 cars north
