Coal train |
Description: |
Coal trains to AES Milliken Station north of Ithaca on the ex LV followed Conrails pattern in the NS era, running off the Southern Tier at Waverly onto the connection the the ex LV at Sayre, running the power around the train, then going north. Here we see a train that has just had the power cut off to change ends. Note the number boards on the lead unit, an ex LMS lease unit, with their CNJ typeface. |

Special train |
Description: |
Binghamton was host to 2004s TRANSCAER meeting, a training event where first responders are trained in railroad practices and hazmat response. NS ran an office car train to the event, seen here on the ex DLW side while attendees are at the event. We didnt rate the F units, but we did get a pair of really clean SDs. The Siemens Exider train sits in the yard in the background. |

Crossing the Rock |
Description: |
A northbound UP train on the ex MKT approaches the diamond for the one time Rock Island Choctaw Route, now the Arkansas & Oklahoma, seen in the foreground. AOK runs the line from here to a connection with the KCS at Howe. They subsequently acquired most of the right of way from here to Seminole and OKC. I'd love to see an MKT switcher squealing around that connecting track with a cut for the Rock, or a Rock GP 7 doing the same for the Katy. |

13T undecorated |
Description: |
NS was taking delivery of new power in the early years of the 2000 decade. Rather than have the builders paint it, they would take delivery "undecorated" and paint the units as they came through the shops in Altoona and Chattanooga. This resulted in quite a few units running around in primer for several months. Here a pair of them leads 13T at the old DLW station. |

Still Southern |
Description: |
NS has been replacing the old signals on its various lines with new PTC compatible signals, but there are places where the old ones remain. One such place is Bremen GA, on the old Southern line to Birmingham. I had gone there to catch the Crescent, but it did not show by dark. Amazing how a train can lose so much time so quickly. |

Undecorated |
Description: |
Athearn didn't know what they were starting when they offered their locomotive models unpainted as well as in typical road names. The prototype railroads got in on the act too. Here in a scene where life imitates art, a new NS SD70M-2 in primer leads 412 south out of Binghamton. It will get painted at either Altoona or Chattanooga as it comes in for service. |

Flowery river running |
Description: |
H 88 along the Susquehanna River between Campville and Owego. The hillside there has a variety of flowers, often making for a pretty scene, though the trees have by this time grown up so much that river views are a challenge in the summer. Its still a pretty spot. The power is not unusual, except that it was more typically GE's. To my 1970's mind, locals usually got smaller power, mostly 4 axle, though in today's world, there isn't much of that left. Today we have a pair of the newest and best first tier power on a job that essentially runs NYSW and CP interchange to Binghamton from Gang Mills. |
