Inbound from Ronkonkoma
Title:  Inbound from Ronkonkoma
Description:  I moved away from the NY area in mid 1988, and did not get a lot of action on the newly electrified Ronkonkoma trains. Hard to tell apart from all the other MUs at this location, but this is one of the Ronkonkoma trains rolling past Bellerose and toward Penn Station with a typical set of cars. One of the oldest M 1's leads. Spring is upon the Island, as th flowers are in bloom and the trees are still in their bright green stage.

Old and new
Title:  Old and new
Description:  A couple of MP 54 museum cars had been painted by a group on the Island, and they had prevailed on the LIRR to store them. For a time in 1977, they were at Port Washington, pushed back into one of the storage tracks there. Since the LIRR needed all the capacity they had there, the regular cars were put into the same track, giving us this odd juxtaposition. It was not the first time I had seen such a combination, though. In the early years of the M 1s, there were frequent f`ilures, and it was not unheard of for a train of MP 54s or MP 72s to be coupled to a disabled train of M 1s to push them to destination.

MUs in the snow
Title:  MUs in the snow
Description:  We didnt get a lot of snow on the Island due to proximity to the ocean, which tended to keep the temperatures a little more moderate than inland. Thus, it was not all that common to get snow shots. That winter we had a few storms, which yielded this shot of a Huntington train approaching Bellerose in a snowy scene.

New equipment
Title:  New equipment
Description:  Well, the cars are not new, but the fact that MU trains are now coming to Ronkonkoma is the best news for Suffolk county commuters since the Port Jeff branch was electrified to Huntington in 1970. This allows riders on the Main Line to avoid the infamous change at Jamaica. This westbound is about to accommodate that wish, ready to depart the new station.

Penn Station bound
Title:  Penn Station bound
Description:  An eastbound Port Washington train roll toward the home signals at the east end of Harold. It will cross over the westbound Main Line tracks in a mile or so, and be on the north side of the station at Woodside, then split from the Main at the location of the former Winfield tower in Elmhurst. Sunnyside was a great place to see a lot of action, if not especially scenic.

M 1s for northeast Queens
Title:  M 1s for northeast Queens
Description:  A westbound Port Washington train makes it stop at Douglaston. Douglaston was one of the better areas in Queens, some of its residents being movie actor Arthur Treacher, known for his roles as a butler; concert pianist Claudio Arrau(and conductor James Conlon grew up here); and tennis star John McEnroe, who also grew up here, learning his trade at the Douglaston Club a mile or so away.

Under the signals
Title:  Under the signals
Description:  One of my favorite places to watch the LIRR action was Queens Village. It was easy to get to, usually there was parking, and it was busy. The added attraction was the row of PRR style position light signals at the east end of the station. Watching the lights change as trains knocked them down and they were cleared was endlessly fascinating. An eastbound Huntington train rolls under the signals, about to cross over from track 3 to track 2 as it makes its way through Queens interlocking, just to the east. The tower is visible at far left, beyond the signal bridge. Note the clear signal on track 4; a Hempstead train is imminent.

Yellowbird
Title:  Yellowbird

Long train
Title:  Long train
Description:  The LIRR ran some long-for a commuter line-trains. Train length was driven by platform length, and the longest typically was 12 cars. One of those trains rolls through Forest Hills on its way to Babylon. The signal bridge overhead shows an approach and a clear for westbound trains. Watching the PRR signals was almost as much fun as watching the trains, as they had numerous aspects designed to keep trains moving in a high density operation.

MUs on the Oyster Bay Branch
Title:  MUs on the Oyster Bay Branch
Description:  Third rail extended to East Williston on the Oyster Bay Branch, but only one train a day took advantage of the electrification. It was train 1501, which deadheaded to East Williston, then turned to run back toward New York at 0730. Here it is making its crossover move to the westbound side and entering the station to make its pick up. The train had the distinction of being the only Main Line train to stop at Floral Park.
