Idle power
Title:  Idle power
Description:  An odd couple sits at BD in Binghamton-the second unit is one of only 10 C30-7's on Conrail. Not sure why these two units were sitting here. May have been power off a coal train to Johnson City.

Local power
Title:  Local power
Description:  CR GP10 7524 and caboose sit outside Morton Salt in Silver Springs NY. This is one of the most prolific salt mining areas in the world. Morton has a huge mine here, and provides much of the road salt for upstate NY and New England.

Interesting yard power
Title:  Interesting yard power
Description:  A GP 40-2 and a GP 10 work at the east end of Gang Mills yard, cleared onto the eastbound main from the yard lead as DABU rolls in from the west. The GP 40 was not unusual here. We saw lots of them in all kinds of service, from locals to stack trains. The GP 10, on the other hand, was something of a novelty, as they tended to stay down toward Enola and eastern PA. We rarely saw them on the Tier.

Yard pullers with a buggy
Title:  Yard pullers with a buggy
Description:  The trim engines are pulling a cut out of the west end of Enola. To my surprise, theres a Chessie van right behind the power. Still some cabooses on trains in those days, especially on trains to or from Virginia. Check out the P&LE gon second out.

Pulling out the racks
Title:  Pulling out the racks
Description:  The yard trim engines have a cut of auto racks in hand as they work the west end of Enola. This was a common power set for Enola, which for some reason seemed not to get the SD 38/MT6 combination found elsewhere.

ALEN with classic power
Title:  ALEN with classic power
Description:  A pair of GP10s has a 91 car ALEN in tow arriving at Enola. The GP 10s were workhorses, but mostly ran on transfers and yard jobs. It was not common to see them on the road.

Hump power turned loose
Title:  Hump power turned loose
Description:  Conrail at that time used GP 10/SW 1500 sets to work the west end of the yard. A pair of them is seen here entering the yard after coming over from Harrisburg with a long cut of local cars to be sorted. These sets didnt get out much; typical transfer power was GP 10s or GP 8s, which were still around in some numbers.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  Conrail had 100 units they designated GP 10, rebuilt from the several hundred GP 9s inherited from its component roads at start up. Typically, these were found in eastern PA, though sometimes elsewhere in the system. Work trains on the Tier tended to get B23-7s, U23Bs, and GP 38s or 40s for power, so it was unusual to find one of these GP 10s at Waverly on a work extra picking up old ties. It was nice to hear the mellow 567 sound as it worked past. Check out the railfan chase vehicle at left, and how about the side of that building??CR

Transfer
Title:  Transfer
Description:  A transfer from Harrisburg to Enola approaches the west end of the bridge with 99 cars behind power not often seen by this date. The GP 10s were fairly common on locals and yard jobs, but the end cab switchers were a vanishing breed by this time.
