Headed back |
Description: |
WNOP17 has dropped its LIRR cars and picked up the 65 cars Long Island set out for them, and is now getting underway back to the Bronx. Of course, the sun dips behind a cloud for the shot I really wanted. |

On the bridge |
Description: |
The Triboro Bridge provided the platform for taking this photo of LISE, on the adjacent Hell Gate. The bridge is a long viaduct over Ward and Randalls Islands, with the famous steel arch crossing the channel where the East River meets the Harlem River. LISE is on the viaduct portion, and will shortly enter the Bronx. One good thing about slow traffic-sometimes you get the shot!! |

Yard power, and a rare road unit |
Description: |
Conrail used many of the ex PC SW1500s for local!and yard jobs in the New York area. We see one here at Oak Point in company of a much more unusual unit, though a regular visitor to the city. Selkirk was home base to much of CRs GE fleet including the four U36Bs. They were a common sight on SELI/LISE and its occasional modification, SEOP/OPSE, the connection to the Long Island at Fresh Pond. U36B 2974 is on hand today, and will return to Selkirk later in the evening. |

Rare bird |
Description: |
Really rare. Conrail had four U36Bs, units built for Auto Train that the car carrier could not pay for, so CR picked them up. They were based at Selkirk and used almost exclusively on the Hudson(I frequently saw them at Fresh Pond on the LIRR) and River Lines. They almost never ran anywhere else. Finding one in Binghamton was highly unusual, but, as sometimes happens with things that "never happen", here it is. |
