Working at Croxton
Title:  Working at Croxton
Description:  The early years saw activity at a number of yards that would ultimately see downgrades or elimination. The Erie Lackawanna was not an important part of the final CR plan, and much of it was abandoned on the west end. Even the east end saw drastic reductions in traffid, though in 1980 it was still possible to see some activity at Croxton, once ELs main New Jersey terminal, though most traffic had shifted to Oak Island

SW 1500 and a retiree
Title:  SW 1500 and a retiree
Description:  Conrails SW 1500s were still quite active all over the system in 1985, but the U30s and GP 30s were on the way out. We see a U30B and a partial view of a GP 30-hows that get to Selkirk??-at the shop.

Transfer power
Title:  Transfer power
Description:  Conrail ran a transfer job from Selkirk to interchange with D&H. Selkirk was the GE capital of the world on Conrail, and any GE was a possibility. Common power in those days was various U boats inherited from its predecessors, such as this U30B. The U30 would not last much longer-it would be gone in a year or two-but the U23B it was coupled to would last into the 1990's.

SELI power lays over
Title:  SELI power lays over
Description:  Power for SELI waits at Glendale as seen from the street while working the Long Island RR interchange. Sometimes the power would sit here for hours while the switcher they brought down would work the Bay Ridge line. It made catching the train on the move a challenge.

Lots of these
Title:  Lots of these
Description:  A model CR had a lot of at start up was the U30B, almost 60 of them. They were common on the trains to Long Island, which ran out of Selkirk. That yard had most of the GEs assigned to it for maintenance, so they were daily visitors at Fresh Pond, which is where we see this one. It and the other road power are waiting for the crew to come back from Bay Ridge with their SW 1500 and whatever cars they might have.

On the Corridor
Title:  On the Corridor
Description:  At CR startup, Amtrak got the Corridor, and CR was a tenant. Ultimately, this moved freight off the corridor to a large degree, as Amtrak raised the wheelage rates to a point that was not economical. There was still a fair amount of local traffic, which was served from a variety of yards. This is one of the locals, with a U23B and U30B working south of Newark Penn Station. McCarter Highway is the bridge at left. Note the EL box at right.
