Passing the station |
Description: |
WEEL39(Way freight, Elmira district, based at ELmira) rolls past the ex PRR station at Horseheads on the remnant of the Pennsys Elmira Division, a line that went from Williamsport to Sodus Point on Lake Ontario. The PRR had rights on the Erie from Southport, on the south side of Elmira, to Horseheads, then regained its own line. Washouts in Pennsylvania during hurricane Agnes in 1972 spelled the end for the line. What was left was served by CR after 1976 from Elmira. |

Stacks with an unusual leader |
Description: |
Though Conrail typically used its B36, B 40, and a variety of six axle units on the priority trains, sometimes it was a case of "whatever runs." This must have been one of those days, as an aging GP 38 is in the lead. |

Four motors east |
Description: |
Mostly-the trailing unit is an SD 40-2. Conrail was not shy about running four axle power on big trains, though here on the ex NYC it was a common thing for a long time. Still, its quite a contrast to todays world of six axle power on everything. This 115 car DNDA was eastbound at Dewitt. |

Hazy westbound |
Description: |
One of the things about the northeast in the summer is the haze. Even the Kodachrome days are muted due to the constant humidity. June is a prime month for that, as you can see with this westbound 141 car train at Wanakah. You can hardly see the signal masts less than a mile away. |

Motley mix |
Description: |
Conrail, as a rule in its later days, generally ran a fairly unified power consist-a set of six axle units, sometimes four, depending on what was available, and what standard practice was. Occasionally, something would get out of kilter, and it became anything goes. Here we see an OIBU rolling west with a GP 38 leading an SD 50, and a pair of NS units, one GE, one EMD. They have their 99 cars well in hand, and will get over the road promptly. |

Helpers |
Description: |
Washington Hill in western Mass was a manned helper district in the mid 80s. A helper set has passed under the local road that passes over the crest and is headed toward Westfield. The GP 38 was an outlier here. The Albany Division, and the Boston Line especially, was almost all GE's in this region. Selkirk was the major maintenance base for GE's on the Conrail system. |

JC coal |

A UNE coal train with 87 cars for the NYSEG Goudy Generating Station on the old DLW main in Johnson City rolls into the west side of Binghamton. For some reason, these trains drew 4 axle power most of the time, even though the road units rarely went to the plant. Local power off WABH 11 usually took the cars down in roughly 45 car cuts. |

Racks north |

There was a large auto facility at North Bergen, and it was not uncommon to see rack trains on the West Shore. This one is rolling toward Selkirk at Ridgefield Park, having just started its journey. As you can see, Conrail was not shy about mixing types of power. Oddly, I had been in Montreal several weeks earlier, and seen VIA 6793 while there-same number, two railroads, two weeks apart. Go figure. |

Lumber arriving |
Description: |
For a short while, there was an operation called Quaboag Transfer that used trackage rights on the Central Vermont to run a pair of piggyback trains from St Albans VT to Palmer Mass, mostly carrying flatbed trailers loaded with lumber. Initially they used a couple of ex CV RS 11s, but reliability issues caused them to go with a couple of ex Conrail GP 38s. One of the ex CR units is arriving at Palmer with the southbound train very early in the morning. |

OIBU rolls 93 cars west near MP 250, having just passed the Tioga County transfer station, and a couple of semaphores, one of which can be seen to the right of the train. This was the spot where the LV Auburn Branch ducked under the EL to reach Sayre. |

Local on the Erie |

A Jersey Division local heads back toward Oak Island at Ridgewood, dodging the commuter trains. A dozen years earlier, the power would be an EL GP35, or maybe a pair of GP 7s. |

Good power on a grubby day |
Description: |
As always happens to me, the really good stuff runs in solid overcast, or at night. This days OIBU is true to form, with a pair of SP units ahead of a CR GP 38 with 70 cars westbound at Endwell, in the gloom. So it goes.... |
