Title:
Got the board
Description:
The Southern Tier picnic train has the board at East Glass and is about to take to the Tier and take off. Once clear of the plant, Jack Kithcart, Southern Tier GM was running. He notched it out and he was gone. I did not catch the train all the way back to Binghamton. Jack must have thought he was running the Erie Limited. Im told he ran 70 MPH to Binghamton.

Say goodbye
Description:
A couple of riders on the rear platform watch the trains progress through East Glass. Hell be waving goodbye as the train gets up to speed for a quick ride east. Jack Kithcart was running, and he must have thought he had the Lake Cities. We never caught up to him.

Good crowd

The picnic goers are getting off the train at Hammond Dam State Park. Despite what had to be a really early start at Port Jervis, there is a good sized crowd.

Roadside
Description:
There was a road close to the tracks for most of the distance south from Corning, so following the train was easy. It has almost reached the park in this shot from PA 267.

Hammond Lake is man made, so the railroad needed to be relocated when it was created. We see the picnic train along the lake on the relocated line.

Picnic train
Description:
Looking like it wants to the the Erie Limited, the Southern Tier picnic train passes BD on the Erie side as it arrives from Port Jervis. It will pick up here for the picnic, at Hammond Dam State Park near Wellsboro PA. Naturally, the faithful are out to record the event.

Classic scene
Description:
A pair of E units leading the Southern Tier picnic train rolls from track 2 to single track at SR just east of Susquehanna. Its not Erie power, and the tower is closed, but it still looks pretty good.

Classic Erie
Description:
The only thing better would have been Erie(or EL, Id take that any day) E 8s on this train, the Southern Tier picnic special, which ran from Port Jervis to Hammond Dam State Park near Wellsboro PA. Here it is on the famous Starrucca Viaduct, a pair of classics if ever there was one.

On familiar turf
Description:
CR 4022, former Erie 833, which has run on this line since 1951, leads an OCS through Kirkwood. The high officials picked the perfect time and the perfect line to ride in early October. The color will be spectacular.

Es
Description:
As usual, the train was pulled by a pair of E 8s. CR 4021 was the trailing unit. Im going to hazard a guess that 4020 was the leader, though I cant find where dad got a photo of the lead unit.

Foreign visitors and a hometown surprise
Description:
A set of CSX power, a mix of Chessie and Seaboard units, sits at Enola in a partly blocked view. The surprise?? Amid the sea of Conrail units at Enola shop, is their executive E 8, 4022m the former Erie 833, seen at mid left of the photo.

Conrail E unit

The only way to ride
Description:
If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach Elberon, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL.
