Got the board
Title:  Got the board
Description:  The Southern Tier picnic train has the board at East Glass and is about to take to the Tier and take off. Once clear of the plant, Jack Kithcart, Southern Tier GM was running. He notched it out and he was gone. I did not catch the train all the way back to Binghamton. Jack must have thought he was running the Erie Limited. Im told he ran 70 MPH to Binghamton.

Classic Erie
Title:  Classic Erie
Description:  The only thing better would have been Erie(or EL, Id take that any day) E 8s on this train, the Southern Tier picnic special, which ran from Port Jervis to Hammond Dam State Park near Wellsboro PA. Here it is on the famous Starrucca Viaduct, a pair of classics if ever there was one.

On familiar turf

Es
Title:  Es
Description:  As usual, the train was pulled by a pair of E 8s. CR 4021 was the trailing unit. Im going to hazard a guess that 4020 was the leader, though I cant find where dad got a photo of the lead unit.

The only way to ride
Title:  The only way to ride
Description:  If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach Elberon, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL.
