Title:
FL 9 and a surprise
Description:
An FL 9 led train rolls out of Harmon, not a big deal in those days. The surprise is the HEP car behind the power. This was the only time I ever saw one in New York. Take a look at the Harom engine tracks in the background. Lots of good stuff over there.

Title:
Dual power
Description:
Train 49, the Lake Shore Limited, arrives at Albany-Renssalaer behind a pair of FL 9s. Originally built for the New Haven basically as an FP 9 with third rail capability to run through from Grand Central to non electrified territory, a dozen found their way onto Amtrak, where eventually six would survive into the 1990s. Using them eliminated the time honored engine change at Harmon, and trains could run straight through to Albany, where the train would have the Boston section switched in. Now the switching and engine change could be completed simultaneously, saving time.

Title:
FL 9 south
Description:
Amtrak had only a dozen FL 9s, about half of which were out of service by this time, so it was always good to see one. This one is leading a southbound train from Albany, and will run it all the way into Grand Central.
