Down the Lehigh |
Description: |
This going away shot of CGAL shows it on the connection from the ex EL Southern Tier Line(in the foreground) to the Lehigh Line. The steel bridge it is about to cross is NY 17. The train will be in Sayre PA on the ex LV in a few minutes. It will work the yard there, picking up and setting out for RELCO, a contract freight car rebuilder working out of the ex LV shop, and for local WAIT 2, which works the Ithaca Branch, the remaining portion of the LV Main and Passenger Main to Ithaca via Van Etten Jct. Despite an easy connection here, the EL and LV did not interchange at this location as a rule, and this was used mostly for detour moves prior to Conrail. Also note: see the comment below regarding the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, an LV component whose isolated track in Elmira was reached via trackage rights over the Erie/EL via this connection. |

This 396 showed up as the shadows were falling, and I was not able to get it in good sun. Still, a Chessie family portrait was too good to pass up, as the three units represented the three components of the Chessie System, even though the leader has been renumbered, that were slowly disappearing into CSX. The B&O GP 30 was a nice touch too. |

Portrait |
Description: |
B&O 4338 gets its portrait taken as it passes the yard. The unit is surprisingly clean considering the snow and slop it had to work in. |

Power in the yard |
Description: |
Not sure if this is Montgomery-I chased the 614 from Gauley Bridge to Huntington, so it has to be west of Gauley Bridge, but dont think its as far as Charleston. Wherever it is, good to see all that Chessie power 30 years later. The pair of units in the foreground had just come in with a westbound coal train. |

Down in the gorge |
Description: |
In January 1985 I went to West Virginia to shoot C&O 614 while it was running engineering tests for Ross Rowland. While waiting at Gauley Bridge, C&O contributed a coal train to the trip. |

Westbound and rolling |
Description: |
A westbound with a pair of then new SD50s rolls out of town toward Cincy. Note the facilities: a snd tower to the left of the train, signals, and a train order board at the station. Classic railroading. |

Out of pot Yard |

A westbound that came from Potomac Yard passes the station, and will cross over to take the westbound main. An eastbound waits beyond the next signal west, and will go to Pot Yard as soon as this train clears. |
