Sunlit
Title:  Sunlit
Description:  205 rolls around the sweeping curve and into the afternoon sun at MP 231 with train 205s 34 stack platforms. The JB Hunt box behind he power in this photo is in a way prophetic. Within a year, I'd be working for them in dispatch in Lowell Ark, giving up the wilds of upstate NY for one of the more up and coming parts of the country. I've been out of NY ten years, and I'm not looking back.

12T with a mix
Title:  12T with a mix
Description:  Of the NS trains that run the Tier, 12T seems to have the greatest power variety. I have seen BNSF, UP Wisconsin Central, MRL, IC , SOO and various lease units on the train. Today ranks right up there, with a UP unit leading, and a FURX ex BNSF unit trailing. We see the train at Chemung, where it is interesting to note how the foliage has grown over the years. Look at some of the shots in my albums taken in the early 90s, when there was hardly a tree here. Now you cant see around the curve to the old Erie station.

Big power for a local
Title:  Big power for a local
Description:  NS was not shy about putting top of the line power on locals and switch jobs. Where CR was using GP 38s and B23s on their locals, and later GP 40s, NS almost always had C40-8s assigned. It was fun watching a six axle GE working the Agway mill on somewhat shaky rail, or down the Vestal Spur, though they did ultimately do some serious track rehab on it around 2003. Here we have a pair of six axles on H 88, a turn job from Gang Mills to Binghamton, with mostly NYSW interchange. The leader is one of the thousand C40's on NS, but the trailing unit is an almost new SD70M-2, a unit youd more typically expect on 206.

Undecorated units
Title:  Undecorated units
Description:  Athearn was noted for making most of the models it offered in an undecorated version, so modelers who preferred to paint their own, or wanted to paint a scheme not offered "out of the box" could do so. Who knew the idea would catch on in real life?? NS took delivery of a large number of C40-8Ws in primer, putting them into service immediately, then painting them at Altoona or Chattanooga later. A pair of them are working the NYSEG plant at Dresden on the ex NYC Corning Secondary, getting ready to pull the empties, which will go to Buffalo, then eventually to the Brownsville PA area for reload.

I miss October in NY
Title:  I miss October in NY
Description:  I moved to Arkansas the year after I took this, where the fall colors are, to put it mildly, lackluster. There are few things I miss about living in NY; the color that could erupt in the fall is one of them. We see empty coal train 527 coming around the curve at MP 231 behind a power set that is colorful in its own right.

Six axles on the DLW
Title:  Six axles on the DLW
Description:  Conrail restricted the Vestal Spur, the one time DLW main segment from West BD to Vestal, to four motor power. NS, on the other hand, had no problem sending heavy power down to Goudy. We see one such train returning to Binghamton. Once there, it will go south as an 888 back to the mines in western PA.

Title:  Waffles can wait
Description:  We were heading from church over to Waffle House, which necessitated a trip across the tracks. I looked down the line as I usually do, to see this train approaching with a pair of NS units leading. This is somewhat unusual, and we dont see a lot of them here, so breakfast could wait. Description:  12T rolls through Endwell as seen from Watson Blvd across the pond. NS was taking delivery of new GEs from Erie in primer at the time, and painting them at Altoona or Chattanooga as they reached those shops.
