OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of thg Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the hteel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lUnes that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here. |

WACG01, a Gang Mills based crew that handled the coal from there to Ithaca, has combined with a train that was left in Ithaca yard by a previous crew. The whole train, now with four units, will head up through town to the NYSEG Milliken Station north of Ithaca. Note the hoppers and conveyor at far left. The other coal customer on this line was Cornell University, high above Cayuga's waters. Conrail would spot loaded hoppers here, which would be emptied into a pit, with the conveyor carrying the coal up to be loaded into trucks for the ride up the hill to the college. There were 17 cars spotted here this day. |

There was a large auto facility at North Bergen, and it was not uncommon to see rack trains on the West Shore. This one is rolling toward Selkirk at Ridgefield Park, having just started its journey. As you can see, Conrail was not shy about mixing types of power. Oddly, I had been in Montreal several weeks earlier, and seen VIA 6793 while there-same number, two railroads, two weeks apart. Go figure. |
