New power, new gates |
Description: |
The DPU on a TXUX coal train rolls away from me-I was on my way to drop recycling, and missed the head end, but its almost a sure thing it was a pair of BNSF units-at Lake Frances Rd. The city just finished a four month(!!!) rehab project on it from the tracks out to Ark 59. The last part of the project is new crossing protection. The crossing, which had flashers, now will have gates too, but theyre not fully operational yet, as you can see by the lack of gates!! A Progress Rail demonstrator brings up the rear. |

Finally caught up |
Description: |
I heard a horn in the distance, and knew there was a northbound approaching from Watts. I had to finish up a couple of things at home before I could take off, and the train was already clearing Lincoln Av by the time I got close enough to see it. What with school buses, traffic and lights, I was not able to catch up to him til Y City Rd south of Decatur. Three units lead north in late day sun. |

It's a short chase, but, oh, goody!! |
Description: |
We had gone out to Wal Mart late on Saturday afternoon. When we got up to Lake Frances Rd, I looked over to see a northbound coal train on the crossing, just cresting the hill from Watts. I could not see the power, but when we got up on the US 412 overpass, I could see it had not reached the crossing farther down on Lincoln. Maybe I can beat him. In a marvel of good timing, as we crossed the tracks, to the north was this soutbbound approaching. Oh, goody, I thought-a meet. This is the 262 approaching Lincoln Av crossing. The northbound was still sneaking up on us. That would be the real surprise. |

Lucky catch |
Description: |
I had gone up to the transfer station, w`ich is adjacent to the Lincoln Av crossing, to dump some wood from a recent project. As I was getting done, I heard a southbound blowing for the crossing. Dont kPow why, but for some reason, I cant hear the trains blowing for Country Club, or Davidson Rd from the dump. So I was caught off guard. The train, a Q KCNL, was moving slowly, onhy about 10 MPH. I went in and paid, then took off through the back side of town, beating him to the US 412 overpass, which is what hes approaching in this photo.*Note the trees to the right of the train. Only a few years ago, they were not tall enough to block the view of the Allen Canning building, which is behind them, now used by ProPak as a warehouse. |

On the crossing |
Description: |
The northbound rolls across Davidson Rd, its five units stretched beyond. I used to think when I saw a train with a lot of power, how cool!! Now, I often wish they had only two or three units-something AC power has made possible-since any more than that often becomes a challenge to frame if you dont have a wide open shot, and you don't get any of the train-this one was 103 cars-in the shot, unless you have a wide open scene, such as near Westville. This guy would get stuck in Gentry, as a southbound worked George's mill north of Decatur, then be held for the Holiday train. It would be well after dark by the time he got moving again. This is why trains outlaw after going only a short distance. |

Description: |
Many of my chases start with a visit to the transfer station in town, when I go up to drop recycling. I usually wait til the bins are way too full, so it takes a while. A lot of the time, I catch something while m there, or shortly after. Today, no such luck. After riding up and down through town, finally a clear at North Siloam Springs. It turned out to be this four unit lite power set heading north. Oh well. No big time railroading today. |

We had just gotten back from a trip to Rogers for lunch/shopping, and I had just finished putting the stuff away, when I heard a horn from what sounded like a northbound. Sloshing about |

I had sanitized the fresh water tank on the Winnebago in preparation for an upcoming trip, and was riding around town to get good coverage of the bleach solution in the tank, That involved a lot of jostling, which meant as many railroad crossings as I could go over. When I hit Davidson Rd, the signal at 226-5 was flashing yellow. Oh, good, somethings coming. By the time I got turned around and back over the crossing, the train was climbing the hill. I beat him down to the Cobb mill, since Davidson was getting into the shadows, and caught this Texas Utilities train, with a KCSM leader passing the feed mill. |

Meet at the signal |
Description: |
The southbound graintrains DPU rolls away as the H train slowly rolls to the signal, anticipating it will clear, allowing him to head north, his seven units more than up to the task of getting 95 cars over tie road. This is the third train I saw today. |

DPU and a water tower |
Description: |
The Siloam water tower in town is in good proximity to the tracks. Too bad the name of the town doesnt face the tracks. The DPU, a KCSM/KCS duo, likely added at Pittsburg-and ahead of the BNSF unit that came with the train from Wyoming-pushes for now, but will shortly be holding back the 131 cars as it drops the 1.5% into Watts |

And away |
Description: |
The DPU recedes south as the train is now completely past me. Time to head home, drain and rinse the tank, and refill for our next adventure. |
