Downtown |
Description: |
The Freightliner and OIBU have gone their separate ways, with the train showing up at the yard as predicted, though it seems to have startled the birds that make a living off the grain shaken from the cars going to Agway. It strikes a classic Binghamton pose as it works the yard. |

Military special |
Description: |
Conrail ran quite a few MIL trains carrying various types of equipment. These increased during the Gulf War, which would begin the following year. Todays train has 16 cars of tanks, seen from the Kirkwood-Conklin connector. Frito Lay and now defuncty 84 Lumber are at left. Note the white bar with red ends on the front handrail of the locomotive. The tanks were slightly oversize, and this was used to check clearances. The Erie, originally built to a six foot gauge, had no clearance issues. Meets, however, could pose a problem, and other trains were supposed to come to a complete stop when meeting on of these MIL trains on double track. |

Single soon |
Description: |
Conrail had a plan to single track the Tier as far east as Binghamton. The plan was to start at CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was, and work east. This was the first section to be done-the segment from NT to Buffalo had been done by EL. We see TV 203 on the section to be single tracked from an old Erie steel bridge, now closed to traffic. There is a semaphore here on track 1, partly obscured by the diesel exhaust, which will be removed during the single track project. For now, it looks good as the train rolls down the Canaseraga Creek valley into Livingston County on the line as Erie built it. In a couple of years, track 2, on the right, will be gone. |

Many of the roadways were either planted with widlflowers, or they just grew there, which is pretty likely, and I tried to get them in a photo when possible. Ted Clarks, behind the train, is one such, and always made a good photo prop from the access road to NY 17 from US 220. |

Eastbound GEs |
Description: |
This eastbound behind a pair of new GEs was rolling 160 cars through Fort Wayne. The flat land the NKP ran through in the upper midwest really lent itself to long trains, and NS was not shy about running some moster consists. These two units are just starting from the signal, and their exhaust is shooting straight up. Once up to speed, it will be an easy ride. |

Wild lashup |
Description: |
With NS and CSX both contributing power to keep the NYSW moving D&H trains, some wild power sets came through town. This was one of them, seen at QD with an SLN 5. |

Shaky HAN |
Description: |
HAN 1 rolls west along the Susquehanna on a day gloomy enough to make the power blur as it goes past. The NS unit was a surprise. NYSW had enough power most of the time that they did not need to run NS or CSX power through to Jersey any more, and it had become unusual to see it in Bingamton by this time. It would have a resurgence later in the 90s as stack traffic increased, and the 20 CSX financed B 40s went back to them after the CP purchase of the D&H. |

Peeking through the weeds |
Description: |
13T approaches Endicott, seen through the overgrowth near the NY 17C overpass. Todays leader is a BNSF GE, with four NS units, to make sure they make Allentown with their 31 cars. This train was usually a good bet for something unusual. |
