Home of the Railroaders |
Description: |
The city of Ellis was once a division point-theres a lake on Big Creek there that was dammed to provide water for steam power back in that era. Time has passed the facilites by, and now its just another town on a long drag across the plains, but they are still proud of their history, as the art on the elevator shows. The oil train pays homage. |

Catching the light |
Description: |
I first saw this vantage point about 20 years ago when I was a driver for JB Hunt. Parking a 53 foot trailer on an overpass to shoot a train photo is not really a good idea, and I lived in NY at the time, so never was able to get back there to shoot trains. Now that I live within 90 minutes of this location, I can get there, but I find the trees have grown up, making what was an open shot pretty limited. I came across this southbound on the ex MKT and decided Id go for it anyway, trees or not. I was able to catch the train with some nose lighting, so not a total waste of time. Ill have to get here earlier in the day and see how it looks with the sun high enough to get over the trees. |

It starts with a horn |
Description: |
We had just gotten back from a trip to Rogers for lunch/shopping, and I had just finished putting the stuff away, when I heard a horn from what sounded like a northbound. Lately, it seems every time I set foot outside, theres a train. This was the first sunny day in about a week, so out the door I went. The quarry turned out to be a northbound empty American Electric Power train returning from Texas, seen here at Davidson Rd, all four units up front of its 124 cars. |

The empty coal train rolls below Butler Bluff as it heads to a meet with the 262, which is waiting in the siding. Leader UP 5888 is a recent repaint, now in the small cab side flag, and no wings on the nose scheme. Too bad. The large flag was a good look, but got pretty ratty as it wore. But the nose wings were an elegant touch, harkening back to a storied past. |

A northbound UP train on the ex MKT approaches the diamond for the one time Rock Island Choctaw Route, now the Arkansas & Oklahoma, seen in the foreground. AOK runs the line from here to a connection with the KCS at Howe. They subsequently acquired most of the right of way from here to Seminole and OKC. I'd love to see an MKT switcher squealing around that connecting track with a cut for the Rock, or a Rock GP 7 doing the same for the Katy. |

These GEs have been in coal service a long time. I recall seeing them over 20 years ago when I came out here while driving for JB Hunt. Theyre still at it. Im retired now!! |

Kansas icon |
Description: |
During our last trip to Denver, I had seen this spot east of Greensburg and wanted to get a shot of a train here. I got one last time, but now was hoping Id get another chance. Just as I thought Id miss it this trip, this westbound rolled out from behind an elevator a few miles east. Some days, you win one!! |

Lucky catch |
Description: |
We were coming back from yet another trip to Wal Mart-theres a Neighborhood Market on the west end of town-and I saw a train under the US 412 overpass, which looked like a northbound coal train in the siding. As I was taking note of that, I saw a UP unit slowly heading south. OK, a meet, probably easing up to the signal while the northbound clears the plant. I swung down to Lake Frances Rd, hoping to beat the southbound to the crossing. The railfan gods smiled on me, and I got to the crossing just as the gates came down. |
