Downtown |
Description: |
The Freightliner and OIBU have gone their separate ways, with the train showing up at the yard as predicted, though it seems to have startled the birds that make a living off the grain shaken from the cars going to Agway. It strikes a classic Binghamton pose as it works the yard. |

Military special |
Description: |
Conrail ran quite a few MIL trains carrying various types of equipment. These increased during the Gulf War, which would begin the following year. Todays train has 16 cars of tanks, seen from the Kirkwood-Conklin connector. Frito Lay and now defuncty 84 Lumber are at left. Note the white bar with red ends on the front handrail of the locomotive. The tanks were slightly oversize, and this was used to check clearances. The Erie, originally built to a six foot gauge, had no clearance issues. Meets, however, could pose a problem, and other trains were supposed to come to a complete stop when meeting on of these MIL trains on double track. |

Single soon |
Description: |
Conrail had a plan to single track the Tier as far east as Binghamton. The plan was to start at CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was, and work east. This was the first section to be done-the segment from NT to Buffalo had been done by EL. We see TV 203 on the section to be single tracked from an old Erie steel bridge, now closed to traffic. There is a semaphore here on track 1, partly obscured by the diesel exhaust, which will be removed during the single track project. For now, it looks good as the train rolls down the Canaseraga Creek valley into Livingston County on the line as Erie built it. In a couple of years, track 2, on the right, will be gone. |

Flowers and a prop |

Many of the roadways were either planted with widlflowers, or they just grew there, which is pretty likely, and I tried to get them in a photo when possible. Waverly must have been built by a model railroader, as there are many building there that you would think were pulled off someones layout. Ted Clarks, behind the train, is one such, and always made a good photo prop from the access road to NY 17 from US 220. |
