Chasing til the cows come home |
Description: |
CP 557 rolls west past a farm near Southport, just east of Elmira along NY 427. There must have been a slow order that day, I was never able to get through Wellsburg after getting a shot, and catch the train so soon. Usually my next chance was up near Big Flats. |

A shot I didnt get often, because it was hard to get while chasing, and not terribly scenic, was this shot approaching the NY 427 crossing in Southport. |

CP on CN |
Description: |
CP had trackage rights on CN in the Hamilton area. One of those trains, this one with 60 cars of oil, is heading for Hamilton behind a really clean SD 40, though Id have gladly traded for one of the Alco behind. |

Alcos north |
Description: |
CP was still actively using their Alco/MLW fleet at this time, mostly on the old D&H, though occasionally, one would get through on the Tier. Train 553 heads for St Luc, just out of Binghamton with a pair of them, one six, one four axle, rolling through the south end of Bevier St with 33 cars. |

Always good to see an Alco |
Description: |
Even if its trailing. A C424 is in second place today, but will be leading tomorrows 557 west. It is about to pass under NY 17C in west Endicott. C424's were not uncommon on the 557/558 trains, but mostly it got an SD40/GP9 combination. Six axle MLW's were more commonly seen on the D&H going north, though they did appear on the Tier from time to time. |

558 past the detector |
Description: |
Train 558 passes the site of the hot box detector on its last lap into Binghamton. The EL had a hot box detector here on track 1; the cabin in the foreground housed the equipment. When it had a hit, it would set the next westbound automatic signal yellow, and the one after that red. |

Alcos on 557 |
Description: |
It was not often that 557 got an all Alco consist, especially six axle units. Thus it was a treat to catch this power set on 557 rolling under the "Welcome to the BC Open" bridge under NY 17C at Endicott. As usual, when I see something good, the weather is dismal. Today's train is a short 11 cars. |

Rolling west |
Description: |
Train 557 rolls past QD on its way out of Binghamton. Gloomy day, but an Alco leading always brightens the day. The Lackawanna station is seen above the trailing unit, with the Erie freight house at far left, visible under the bridge. The Erie station stood immediately behind the power, and was razed in 1976 soon after the Conrail start up. |

Old signals |
Description: |
In its original configuration, the DLW S&U lines crossed the D&H here at a location called BX and went to East Binghamton yard, which today is used by CP. The D&H Bevier St yard was(is) to the left out of the photo, It commected here to the DLW and the Erie, with the line to their passenger station and the Erie yard crossing the DLW line. Were looking south on the Lackawanna at a CP train coming up the old DLW, and heading onto the D&H in a reworking of the junction, now all switches with the diamond long removed. The signals guarded the BX crossing, but have been out of service for a long tiime by the date of this photo. |

Yard grab |
Description: |
I was able to get a grab shot off the train as we passed the yard in St John. Alcos in the house-an RS 23 and a C424. The RS 23's were common, and held down a variety of local and yard assignments. Some would get assigned to the D&H when CP took over the following year. |
