Classic scene
Title:  Classic scene
Description:  This shot shows some of the remnants of the south end of Bevier St, on the east side of Binghamton. The signal protects what was at one time the crossing at BX, where train 390 is rolling north in this view taken from alongside the Agway plant, seen at right. Agway was an active Conrail customer at the time of the photo(and sometimes got grain in Erie boxcars). Were standing on the main track of the DLW Syracuse and Utica line, which crossed the D&H where the train is moving. Behind me out of sight is the yard that serviced that line, YO yard. It was abandoned long before this photo was taken. The train is on the D&H, which bears to the east into Bevier St yard before going up to Belden tunnel and the capital district. Bevier St was adjacent to the DLW YO yard. The crossing at BX was removed in the early 80s and changed to a set of crossovers, with the tracks now forming a wye that allowed trains to go either to the ex DLW East Binghamton yard, or to the Buffalo Runner, the line this train is on. The NYSW, which had acquired the DLW trackage north of Binghamton, connected to the Buffalo Runner through a switch, under 390's third unit, to access its yard at the east end of Eries QD yard, near Liberty St. In 1990, the overpasses on Bevier St were modified, with both the NYSW and CP going onto one bridge that was high enough to clear a standard 13'6" truck, eliminating the two D&H spans and the DLW bridge to the west of those. The NYSW now used the D&H alignment to reach its ex DLW line via a connection north of Bevier St, with the DLW line through YO yard abandoned. The signals remained up-there's one on the D&H side as well-into the nid 1990's, though they had been inactive for many years by that time.

Turning the power
Title:  Turning the power
Description:  The power off a 390 grain train rolls through BD. It will reverse here, go through BD up to Bevier St, then back down onto its train, which is sitting at QD downtown. I guess the crew didnt want to ride in the SOO leader.

Bright red
Title:  Bright red
Description:  SOO power leads a monster 167-todays train had 99 freight and 56 stack platforms-into the sun as seen from the shoulder of NY 417 just east of Addison. This shot can only be done late in the day. Usually the sun is on the other side of the train.

Getting started
Title:  Getting started
Description:  I dont recall now if I was on a day off, or this was just after work. I had regular hours, but they differed every day. This was taken on a Tuesday, so its likely it was my day off. We start close to home, on the tangent near MP 232 between Campville and Owego, with the red face of a SOO SD leading 167 west into the sun.

Long jump
Title:  Long jump
Description:  After getting the 167 at Campville, I jumped down to Smithboro, about 13 miles, taking NY 17 to exit 62, since there was no way I was beating him through Owego. I didnt want to risk getting scooped at Tioga Center, so I ran down to the west end of Smithboro, where the tracks come up to the road.

Wide view
Title:  Wide view
Description:  The next jump was an easy one. I just had to step on it. This is the view from NY 17C near the Tioga transfer station at MP 249 between Barton and Waverly. It was a good "grab and go" spot. The third unit is a classic, one of SOO's original SD 40's.

East side
Title:  East side
Description:  If a train was going fast enough, or I got stuck behind some slowpoke-its amazing the number of people who drive like they just dont care if they ever get where theyre going-I usually could not beat a train to downtown Waverly with its model railroad like buildings. So I had to go with other options. In this case, I grabbed the shot from about where the Tier crossed over the Ithaca Secondary, the former LV main. A SOO unit heading into the sun with a big train(99 freight, and 56 stack platforms) looks good in the late afternoon
