FA |
Description: |
Dad was not really a railfan, but hed shoot a photo of anything that struck him. During our two weeks in 1975, we caught this FA about to roll out on a westbound train from Montauk. The engineer on the train didnt want the aging cab unit, so he moved the Precision GP 9 to the west end of the train and coupled it ahead of the Alco, much to his crews dismay. |

Early in the morning |
Description: |
An FA power pack and what will eventually replace many of them, an MP 15, stand in the yard at Oyster Bay. The MP 15 will lead a later train. The FA will go out shortly, with me riding the left hand seat as part of a LIRR program to familiarize riders with the diesel operations on the railroad, a PR program that they did in 1979. |

I rode this |
Description: |
In the late 70's LIRR had a program where you could ride the cab of a diesel train. The idea was to give commuters a better idea of what happened on the head end, and show the operating realities that crews dealt with, hopefully to foster some understanding on the part of riders when the trains were late. My first thought was "I can ride an FA" I rode from Oyster Bay to Hunterspoint Av. Had a good time on the trip. This was the unit I rode, prior to leaving Oyster Bay. |
