Going downtown |
Description: |
A westbound CR train has cut off its train at BD, and is taking the power, a pair of SD 40s and a GP 38, down to QD to work the Erie yard. This was my first visit to Binghamton, and I was not familiar with the symbols then; there were several trains that ran the line from Jersey to points test. A few years later, that would be trimmed to two, OIEL and OIBU. I would guess this would be OIBU, or something similar, as it showed in the afternoon, which was its usual time slot. |

Rolling past Cass St |
Description: |
BUOI rolls into Hornell past Cass St tower, now a relay case for CP Cass, as it enters Hornell. The tower is partly seen at far right. To the far left, coming out from under the first car, the track leading to the left is the Erie main to Jamestown and Youngstown OH. It was cut the year before, when Conrail essentially abandoned it as a through route, with what little traffic remained served by Olean based locals, with cars forwarded over the ex PRR Buffalo Line. It would be another ten years til WNY&P resored the connectino after NS took over the line. For now, we have only the ghosts of ELOI and 2NY 100 to take the switch and climb toward Tip Top. |
