Morning line up
Title:  Morning line up
Description:  A set of C 420s is on the ready track at Holban Yard, ready to move out with whatever the yardmaster has put together for them. Theyll go east later in the day. Holban, a combination of HOLlis and st alBANs, sat between the two sections of Queens, in a triangle shape, bounded by the Main Line on the north, and the Montauk Branch on the south. The Montauk Branch is seen behind the power, its viaduct crossing over the eastbound Main Line and yard lead just west of the yard at a place called Hillside, where there was an abandoned station. It is used by trains going to Babylon, as well as a few diesel trains going farther east.

Work train
Title:  Work train
Description:  In June 1984, there was a washout on the Port Washington Branch about 1/2 mile east of Little Neck, which closed the line for a couple of weeks while the repairs were made. These C 420s brought the work train out and were parked at Douglaston station, a very unusual circumstance. View is from the Douglaston Parkway overpass.

RF 91
Title:  RF 91
Description:  RF 91 was the westbound road freight that ran Sunday through Thursday nights from Pine Aire to Fresh Pond. It worked some of the industrial sidings in Nassau county, such as one just east of the New Hyde Park station. It has stopped in the station while the ground man lines the switches to access the customer. Time?? Around 0300.

RF 7 west
Title:  RF 7 west
Description:  RF 7 works on the Montauk branch at Fresh Pond. We see it passing under the Conrail line from Hell Gate Bridge, where interchange traffic is exchanged between the LIRR and CR. The dwarf signal protects the connecting track from the Bay Ridge line, which curves sharply off to the left out of the picture, from trains leaving Fresh Pond yard. The train is about to pass Pond tower, and then will roll under the NYCTA Myrtle Av line, at the time the M train.

Local power
Title:  Local power
Description:  Long Island had a small yard at Pinelawn. The power there was usually an MP 15, but occasionally would be one or two C 420s. Today I got lucky and caught a pair of Centuries there. Note the maintenance trucks at right. LIRR kept the blue/yellow on its vehicles long after the trains went to blue and white.

Quiet at Queens Village
Title:  Quiet at Queens Village
Description:  RF 11, with consecutively numbered C 420's, cools its heels at the Queens Village station as it waits for a late night parade of passenger trains. There will be an eastbound Montauk train, followed by an Oyster Bay train. Once they clear, the freight will get the board to go east to Pine Aire with 64 cars and cabin #64. Tonights train is unusual, having three C 420s. This train almost always got two units.

Waiting for the board
Title:  Waiting for the board
Description:  RF 11 was pulled up to the signal on track 4 at Queens to wait for traffic, not uncommon as there was a flurry of passenger trains around 1 AM every night. Todays train has three C 420s instead of the usual two. Pennsys position light signals were always interesting to watch, especially so at night. Hell get going after the Oyster Bay train clears going east.

Commuters rolling east
Title:  Commuters rolling east
Description:  RF 63 has tied up in the siding at Deer Park, clearing up at the end of his day for the evening rush. Train 254 with MP 15 163 leading goes past the old Deer Park station en route to the end of its run in Ronkonkoma. The station here is no longer in use for passengers, having been supplanted by the new high level station built as part of the Ronkonkoma electrification. It will be kept for the freight crews and MOW.

End of the line
Title:  End of the line
Description:  The remaining 8 C 420s that had been working in freight service on the LIRR sit outside the Morris Park shops after being pulled from service following the opening of the Ronkonkoma electrification. The retirement would be short, as several would return to service, including 225 and 229, which would be repainted in the 1960s era blue and yellow MTA scheme.
