FA old style
Title:  FA old style
Description:  The LIRR was in paint scheme transition in the late 1970s. They had received their new GP 38s-their first EMDs-in a blue and white scheme inspired by the Milwaukee Roads bicentennial unit. Other power was starting to make the transition, but the new scheme had not made it onto everything yet, and the FAs were still in the gray with blue stripe at the window band level. One of them is going away under the signals on an Oyster Bay train, hanging onto its old paint just a little longer.

LIRR 255 and an FA
Title:  LIRR 255 and an FA
Description:  Some of the crews did not like running from the FA cab units, and where they had a chance, would wye the GP 38s and use them as leaders. Heres one such example at Mineola.

Light power to Morris Park
Title:  Light power to Morris Park
Description:  No, this is not the power for a freight!! The Montauk Branch was often used to run non revenue moves between Long Island City and Jamaica, such as this one, an MP 15 taking an FA to Morris Park for servicing.

E Williston
Title:  E Williston
Description:  One of the more pictuesque stations on the Long Island is at East Williston. It has the distinction of being the only station on the Oyster Bay branch with electric MU service even if only one train per day, a westbound in the morning.

Coming and going
Title:  Coming and going
Description:  The westbound train from Oyster Bay has arrived, and is making its stop, as the eastbound pulls away in the right distance. At this time, Long Island was about the only place in North America where you could see a pair of FAs meeting.

Late afternoon view
Title:  Late afternoon view
Description:  In the late afternoon during the summer, the sun swung around to the north side of the tracks, and this angle was possible. We see an Oyster Bay train crossing Carnation Av as it rolls through Floral Park station en route to connections at Jamaica The exhaust from the generator set in the FA makes it look like it is actually powering this train. Nice thought!!
