Hot time in the old town
Title:  Hot time in the old town
Description:  The shot is kinda nuked, but I like the effect. When the Steamtown trains ran on the ex DLW to Kinglsey, the station area came alive with a lot more activity than youd expect for the size of the town. Several hundred riders were met by a crew of volunteers who opened the station, selling refreshments and souvenirs. It was quite a party. In this shot, we see 4-6-2 2317 along with a big crowd.

Big bridge, small train
Title:  Big bridge, small train
Description:  The train isnt actually so small, its just that the bridge is huge. A hazy day finds the Steamtown trip to Kingsley peering through the fog to see the small town of Nicholson far below.

Arriving at the DLW station
Title:  Arriving at the DLW station
Description:  One of the benefits of running Steamtown trains on the ex DLW was that the station at Kingsley needed minimal structural work to get it in shape-the DLW built everything on the cutoff for the ages. One of the weekend excursions from Scranton arrives at Kingsley on a September weekend. Sadly, the DLW didnt build for the vandals, and several years after the trains stopped coming here, the building had been so badly damaged it had to be torn down.

Even with a tele, its a big bridge
Title:  Even with a tele, its a big bridge
Description:  The Steamtown train to Kingsley rides across Tunkhannock Viaduct as seen from the cemetery on the west side of Nicholson. Even from a distance, its huge. The heritage is unquestioned, as can be seen by the name of the former owner still proudly mounted on one of the arches.

Backward running
Title:  Backward running
Description:  The train had no place to turn the engine at Kingsley, so the return to Scranton was done in reverse. Its not the most photogenic look for a steam engine, and most photographers shot the northbound trip, and bagged the return. I caught 2317 rolling past the siding at Hop Bottom on the way back to Scranton this day.

Description:  The southbound trip from Binghamton stopped at Hallstead for the locals. During the stop, I was able to get a shot of the engine crew. The engineer is legendary D&H man Bernie OBrien, looking for all the world like its 1948. This is the same man who has his name on the side of D&H 7312.

Turn, turn, turn
Title:  Turn, turn, turn
Description:  There has not been a turntable at Binghamton for many years, so to turn the train, it was run up Southern Tier track 1 from BD to QD, backed up the Buffalo runner past the crossovers at the south end of Bevier St, then run back over the D&H, crossing the Tier at BD, then south. Here it is at the south end of Bevier St. The line to the left is the ex DLW Syracuse and Utica Branch, now the NYSW Northern Division.

Run around
Title:  Run around
Description:  There are no turning facilities in most places, even some that once had them. As a result, sometimes power has to run backwards, as is the case here. CP 2317, which ran forward up from Scranton, now runs around its train, and will roll backward down the hill. It still makes a good looking scene under one of the many old DLW signal bridges still in place on this line, once the Route of Phoebe Snow.
