Not much of this any more |
Description: |
Forty years ago, sights like this were common, and trailers of all sizes were on every intermodal train. With the advent of stacked containers in the mid 1980s, and their rapid growth as the economics proved themselves, sights like this became more and more uncommon. Out west, they are holding on, some UPS and ABF pups riding south on the Greeley Sub. |

Some days there just aint much |
Description: |
Many of my chases start with a visit to the transfer station in town, when I go up to drop recycling. I usually wait til the bins are way too full, so it takes a while. A lot of the time, I catch something while m there, or shortly after. Today, no such luck. After riding up and down through town, finally a clear at North Siloam Springs. It turned out to be this four unit lite power set heading north. Oh well. No big time railroading today. |

The city of Ellis was once a division point-theres a lake on Big Creek there that was dammed to provide water for steam power back in that era. Time has passed the facilites by, and now its just another town on a long drag across the plains, but they are still proud of their history, as the art on the elevator shows. The oil train pays homage. |

Interstate local |
Description: |
We were in Denver two days, starting back after our second consult and a hearty East Side Kosher Deli lunch. On our way out of town, we pulled up next to this local on the UPs Kansas Pacific line, It was a solid train of covered hoppers, so Im guessing it was a transfer move to Kyle Railways, which runs a long stretch of the former Rock Island across eastern Colorado and Kansas, This was a lucky catch; they dont run a lot of trains here since the coal traffic dropped off, and this train often ran at night when wed stay in the KOA in Strasburg. My wife was driving, I got the shot from I 70, a good clip-we were going maybe 85 at the time!! |

Greeley Sub late in the day |
Description: |
My wife consults with a couple of doctors at National Jewish Health in Denver, for which we do an annual trip there for follow ups. We stayed in Brighton this trip. As we were coming back from dinner, I had just pulled into the parking lot, and heard a horn-the UP Greeley Sub follows US 85, the main route through town. She bailed, and I gave chase, catching him here, just outside Henderson, in low afternoon light, three units and a good sized train of stacks and TOFC, a vanishing sight these days. |

Almost 20 years old |
Description: |
KCS acquired a large group of these cars painted in the "Retro Belle" scheme in 2007, around the same time as Mike Haverty introduced the Belle scheme on new locomotives. They were intended to run together, which they did for a while. After a while, the Retro Belle cars became free runners, and now you rarely see them in any kind of unit train. This one was solo on a southbound at Davidson Rd, just north of Siloam Springs |

Interesting reporting mark |
Description: |
This car was in a southbound AEPX train. The CTRN initials are for the Central of Tennessee Railway and Navigation Co, interestingly, a UP owned mark. I've never seen these initials that I can recall. May be a holdover of a long ago subsidiary, and possibly a trademark thing, since UP has shown a predilection for preserving their reporting marks to maintain the trademarks. |

Storage unit |
Description: |
Or, how we did things before PODs. This car has been on this property as long as I can remember-Ive lived in town for 16 years-but only recently did the home owner clear off the brush to reveal enough of the car to merit a photo. Hard to tell what road it was from-the paint is faded to almost gone-but it may have been CNW. In a yard along Country Club Rd. |

Not looking good |
Description: |
The boxcar that was being used as a storage shed at this house in Siloam Springs-see photos from Nov 22 and Nov 23- has been pushed onto its side. Any time Ive seen a car toppled like this, its usually a sign that it will be cut up fairly soon. This car was only recently tipped, in the last few weeks. |

The end |
Description: |
Literally, and probably literally. An end view of the ex CNW box that was a storage shed at the house on Tahlequah St. It is likely to meet its demise in fairly short order. |

Yard box |
Description: |
Boxcars have been used as storage units as long as there have been box cars. This one is in a yard in Siloam Springs. Ive shot it before, from a more end-on angle. The sun was good this day for a broadside view of this ex CNW 60 foot box. Too bad the car number is eroded off. |

Its all a blur to me now |
Description: |
The rear DPU rolls away from me, the low light now making for some blurring of the scene as the bright red engine rolls south. |
